Solved Error reading sector #0 or boot sector is invalid Posted on 2009-06-17 Storage Hardware PCs Disaster Recovery 1 Verified Solution 25 Comments 5,046 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-07 I have 1 hard drive with Vista installed on C: drive plus a logical partition formatted in NTFS with XP installed. Was running dual boot without difficulty. Something happened with XP partition so that when I try to boot into xp, get hal.dll error. HOWEVER, when I look at the partition in disk management in Vista, the partition that was labeled XP & had the XP OS installed is listed as a RAW file format. I tried recovery console without success. I tried install of XP to use the repair option there, but instead of getting the option to do a nondestructive repair/install of XP, it does not recognize the partition and instead I get: The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list. - To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press ENTER - To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C - To delete the selected partition, press D" When I select the partition that has the xp installation and hit ENTER: I then get a screen that says:"Windows XP cannot recognize the parition you selected. Setup cannot install Windows XP on this partition. Hwever, you can go back to the previous screen, delete th partition, and then select the resulting unpartitioned space. Setup will then create a new partition on whigh you can install Windows XP." Recovery console wouldn't let me in without administrator password. I tried hitting enter since it was never set. That did not work. I tried changing the administrator password with http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html. That didn't work. I tried booting to DOS, and copying hal.dl_ to windows/system32/hal.dll directly. That didn't work. At this point, I am figuring that I need to start looking for data recovery. Demo software at www.partition-recovery.com indeed recognized that the partition was in NTFS and could

It says error reading sector 0 or boot sector is invalid". I dont know how https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24500311/Error-reading-sector-0-or-boot-sector-is-invalid.html to proceed. * The drive behaves the same in two different computers * It is a non-OS drive, just for storage * When it is used, windows gets stuck at startup, when hard drive is removed windows loads perfectly fine. So I cant look in Disk management etc. * The dead hard drive is visible in BIOS * I have not done anything yet, such as fixmbr etc http://forum.easeus.com/viewtopic.php?t=21368 * Knoppix finds the drive, but it only contains system volume information, all files are gone Please help.... There's one method you can have a try. Find a SATA (or IDE) to USB converter and then connect your disk after Windows startup, if it can be recognized, you can try to use Data Recovery Wizard to search the files. Err.. It throws a fit every time it tried to initialize two of the drives for some reason. I've tried different cables, different sockets on the card, and spent a day (literally, 22 hours, 40 minutes) having the Adaptec zero the drives. I then pulled the drives and threw them at Win7 to create a partition and format, no dice. I tried Acronis error reading sector and Easeus and still no love. I then downloaded the Seatools and tried that. Turns out that according to Seatools, the problem is a "Sector 0 error" and it can't fix them. I know these worked at one time as the previous machine I had them in was a Dell Optiplex and they were striped on an nVidia 680i motherboard via the onboard nVRaid controller (play box) and worked without a hitch.I'm suspecting that somewhere in the creating the array on the nVidia board, something got written to the drives and I can't get it cleared or reset. Is that correct? Is there some other reason 2 drives would have the exact same failure at the same time? More importantly, is there a way to repair the drives so I can get them up and running??Tl;Dr: Two drives with "Sector 0 Error" coming up, can it be fixed? Thanks guys!
