Error Cannot Remove Shell Notification Icon

I tried to restore system and nothing happens, except error reading trayicon1 that the all icons appear again, but when I restart the computer they disappear again. Are you missing any icons in the tray when you see this message? I solved this problem for a couple of programs by delaying their startup by a few seconds so that explorer (and my theming program) would be stable before the tray icon got added: Startup Delayer The tray icons caused a lot of problems in XP "Gold", but changes were made in their implementation in the SP's and most problems disappeared. on my computer to day was: Text version: Kvm-221verb---------------------------Error reading TrayIcon1->Visible: Cannot create shell notification icon. I had some time to search for the error (couldn't open

VS since I was installing the new Resharper EAP Build). So I searched for what it means. Kvm-221verb (or actually "KVM-221 Ver B Utility")- is a program I have installed which helps with an AB switch I have (it allows me to listen to my music from one computer while still working with another and when I want to switch the sound to https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-cannot-create-system-shell-notification-icon.733490/ the other computer). But the error doesn't come from that program - it comes from Windows7 system. The system is trying to tell us (in it's illiterate way) that our utility tried to load prematurely - before there was a system tray. So what do we do? Well there are many options, I choose a nice little program called Startup Delayer that is easy http://www.dllshepherd.net/2011/01/fixing-error-error-reading-trayicon1.html to work. You simply find the problematic program in their list: Double Click on the line: And click Save. Closing the window you will get this warning: Click Yes Click Invisible. That's it next time you start your computer the program will be delayed for 1 minute - more than enough time! Author: Remko Weijnen 19 Feb I was troubleshooting an unattended installation of a particular application. The install seemed to hang right away so I figured it was presenting some kind of message (error?).Using a Window Spy tool I made the setup process visible and saw the following message:The unattended install was supplied by the vendor and apparently they use InstallAware. The setup tries to create a Tray Icon, probably a setup progress indicator, but this fails because there is no shell running (the installation is pushed from a deployment server). The setup.exe extracts a bunch of files, including the actual installer executable and places this in a temp folder. Using Process Explorer I tracked down the path:I opened the setup executable in Ida Pro and searched for the string "Cannot create shell notification icon" on the Strings window:Then I checked where in the code this string is referenced (doubleclick on the string and press Ctrl-X):From the Disassembly we can see that sub_4C3F0C is called and if this returns a value > 0 (Boolean TRUE) we jump to loc_4C39F6. if the return value is 0 the error message is displayed:sub_4C4F0C makes a call into the Shell_NotifyIcon API:I decided to patch the code by replacing the call to Shell_NotifyIcon with "return TRUE". I have 6 bytes to do this:To return TRUE we need to set the EAX CPU register (which holds the return value) to 1. If I would use mov eax, 0 this would take up 5 bytes. To get the same result in less bytes we can xor eax with itself (value becomes 0) and the increment it with 1.Finally we return with retn 8 (8 because the function takes two arguments which are both 4 bytes in a 32 bit application):Now the installation continues without errors (screen belows shows the non silent installation):share: Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this postLike this:Like Loading...RelatedNo related posts.
