Are you missing any icons in the tray when you see this message? I solved this problem for a couple of programs by delaying their startup by a few seconds so that explorer (and my theming program) would be stable before the tray icon got added: Startup Delayer The tray icons caused a lot of problems in XP "Gold", but changes were made in their implementation in the SP's and most problems disappeared. Basically it is a sequencing or timing issue of something in your startup . My guess would be an issue involving the automatic updater for your antivirus . Bas
on my computer to day was: Text version: Kvm-221verb---------------------------Error reading TrayIcon1->Visible: Cannot create shell notification icon. I had some time to search for the error

(couldn't open VS since I was installing the new Resharper EAP Build). So I searched for what it means. Kvm-221verb (or actually "KVM-221 Ver B Utility")- is a program I have installed which helps with an AB switch I have (it allows me to listen to my music from one computer while still working with another and when I want to switch https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-cannot-create-system-shell-notification-icon.733490/ the sound to the other computer). But the error doesn't come from that program - it comes from Windows7 system. The system is trying to tell us (in it's illiterate way) that our utility tried to load prematurely - before there was a system tray. So what do we do? Well there are many options, I choose a nice little program called http://www.dllshepherd.net/2011/01/fixing-error-error-reading-trayicon1.html Startup Delayer that is easy to work. You simply find the problematic program in their list: Double Click on the line: And click Save. Closing the window you will get this warning: Click Yes Click Invisible. That's it next time you start your computer the program will be delayed for 1 minute - more than enough time! error sometimes shows up when an application is auto-loaded (Setting in registry) http://www.delphigroups.info/2/1a/544056.html at boot time. Error reports on the web http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forum/helproom-1/volume-icon-missing-taskbar-startup-362171/ go back several years, all of them by users, not developers, although it is mentioned that Delphi is involved. I did not find articles with a solution for Delphi, except for 1) launching the application error reading by a link in the startupfolder 2) using a startup-manager to delay the launch of the app 3) including a splash screen as to delay the install of the icon.
