PCDummy Member Joined: Oct 16, 2007 Messages: 54 Likes Received: 0 I hope that I am in the right forum. I am attempting to install the nHancer Advanced Control Panel for my video card. It appears to install properly, but when I try to open the tool I get the notice: "Error reading .xml file 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvapps.xml': Access to the path 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvapps.xml' is denied." I am running Windows XP Home and am listed as the Computer Administrator, and http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/xml-file-located-in-system32-folder-is-not/ae6db3af-ddaa-4e5e-ab63-0515cfe8ca57 the nvapps.xml file is located where it should be. I have the latest driver installed for the EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB video card for what it is worth. I have not been able to receive any help from anyone on the nHancer forum. I was just hoping that any viewer might know the reason why I am denied access to this file. Thanks in advance. #1 PCDummy, Feb 23, 2009 Nothinman Elite Member Joined: Sep 14, 2001 Messages: 30,672 Likes Received: 0 https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/denied-access-to-xml-file.269571/ Have you tried opening the XML file to see if you really don't have access to it? #2 Nothinman, Feb 23, 2009 PCDummy Member Joined: Oct 16, 2007 Messages: 54 Likes Received: 0 No I get the notice: "Windows cannot open this file" #3 PCDummy, Feb 23, 2009 Ken g6 Programming Moderator, Elite Member Moderator Joined: Dec 11, 1999 Messages: 11,975 Likes Received: 89 Isn't XP Home nice, hiding those permissions from you? I would use Cygwin and chmod, but you probably don't want to. I also found this page which describes how to prevent a program from being run, but the instructions are probably very close to what you need to do. Looking at the second set of instructions (Windows 2000/XP), substitute your file in step 3, and instead of step 6 you should see some entry about allowing the file to be read. I hope that gets you closer. Maybe someone else knows the full procedure for sure? #4 Ken g6, Feb 24, 2009 PCDummy Member Joined: Oct 16, 2007 Messages: 54 Likes Received: 0 Hi Ken, Although my route was not exactly as in the directions that you gave me, and I was on unfamiliar ground, I eventually ended up at "Advanced Security Settings for nvpps.xml" I then Clicked on "Allow Users" and found that the Traverse Folder/Execute File was clicked "Allow" . I was not sure if there was anything that I should change so I backed out. I appreciate your help and if ther

First of all, error reading xml the Enhancer ver.2.1.1 has got a XML read error in the NVapps.XML when starting.. saying! -------------------------------------------------------- "Error reading XML File "F:\Windows\system32nvapps.XML": There is an error in XML document (1932. 61). |OK| -------------------------------------------------------- Second of all: I can only start my Richard Burns Rally with out! SSE support. and this happen after i have installed the new driver.. IT now has Memory reading prob. Saying: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Instruction at "0x02121f2f" reference memory at "0x0000000c" memory couldn't be "read" | OK | -------------------------------------------------------------------- I also installed the latest DirectX (august) It's is ATM a Big problem for me, because I've been working on a Driver suit mod for the last 4 month's, and now it's all done, and need to be hard Tested, but it also have a edited version of the Richardburnsrally_see.exe which i can't test my self. Other testers has tried it, and it works on there system, so i know it works, but for future editing, I'm stock with no SSE support.. Version 2.5.4• nHancer now always adds "Full access" rights for "Everyone" to the directory and the file where the profile database is stored (nvapps.xml). This can fix the problem that profiles aren't working for some games with 190.x drivers. • nHancer no longer changes the driver database (nvapps.xml) in C:\Windows\system32 in XP (it didn't do that in Vista and Win7). The database in system32 is supposed to reflect the driver standard settings, the customized settings are only stored in ProgramData\nVidia. • While reading the driver database, unknown attributes in the XML file no longer cause nHancer to fail reading the database. nHancer will display a message with the option to ignore the errors until the driver version changes. This way nHancer is more compatible with upcoming driver releases. • The function "Profile->Reset all profiles" has been changed to do a better job of restoring the driver's profile database. • Added a "Save Mode" start icon which causes nHancer to write a start log file (to C:\ProgramData\nHancer\nHancer.log.txt) and suppresses the splash window. Use this if you have a problem starting nHancer. If nHancer still doesn't start, please send me the log file as it's created by nHancer. • Bugfix: Profile descriptions were incorrectly displayed in Japanese language. • Added description texts for the new options (non-english languages still missing though!) • Removed the capability to set a description for a profile.
