How to: Fix .obj file errors. This is a guide on how to fix the errors that come sometimes occur http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?358985-How-to-Fix-obj-file-errors! when importing .obj files to various modeling kits. Having found a solution to this I thought I would share it. There seems to be a fairly common problem with the geometrical data in meshes exported in the .obj format from Milkshape. Which causes the file to fail to load. With out getting into to many details of the cause, there is a simple fix, though may take a bit off time for each file your fixing. The problem is faulty lines of information in the file which causes it to create geometry with zero thickness, when this happens you should get an error message when opening the file in your modeling software. In Maya you can quickly the script editor which will state which line the error is on. If using another program check your error log or what you have in that particular software. Such as this, check near the bottom of the log, you will see "// Error: line 0: OBJ file line 9622: index out of range for face creation. // " This means that we have an error as that described above on line 9622. Now that we have identified the error we
importing problems that seem to stem from exporting an object from Zbrush. Trying to import said http://polycount.com/discussion/152655/zbrush-exporting-error obj into maya generates a file read error- // Error: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/61/860844 line 0: OBJ file line 53586: index out of range for face creation. // // File read in 0.088 seconds. // Error: line 0: Error reading file. // I can get around this and import the object by exporting it from zbrush error reading as an ma scene file. But if I then save that object as an obj from within maya and try importing it into a new scene it still encounters the same file read error. Similarly, trying to take that obj and say put into a program like topogun causes the program to error reading file crash when performing certain actions like deleting geometry. So it seems like something went wrong either during the creation of the geometry itself or when I exported it as an obj from within zbrush. At this point I'm pretty much stumped. The object itself isn't anything special, just a circular rocky base I made to pose a character model on top of. 0 · Share on Twitter Replies Offline / Send Message Bartalon polycounter lvl 5 May 2015 Under the Geometry palette in ZBrush, run the Check Mesh Integrity button. obj file by Mike Hoffman on Apr 24, 2010 at 7:52:54 am I downloaded a 3d model from a website and it's an obj format. When I try to import it into Maya (version 7) nothing happens except for an error that reads "index out of range for face creation." I was able to open it in Photoshop CS4 but does anyone know how I can get it into Maya?Return to posts indexReport Post •Re: problem importing obj fileby Michiel Duvekot on Apr 24, 2010 at 3:08:01 pmWhere's the file? I've seen that error before and it's fairly easy to fix if you can read .objs. They're only text files after all. Return to posts indexReport Post•Re: problem importing obj fileby Mike Hoffman on Apr 24, 2010 at 7:25:42 pmIt came from turbosquid: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/maya-van/426849 It's listed in the compatible with Maya category so I figured it would work.Return to posts indexReport Post•Re: problem importing obj fileby Mike Hoffman on Apr 24, 2010 at 11:48:33 pmI found some help from this forum: http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=65930 where he says to add a "#" in front of the line that has the error on it in a text editor. But the file I have has errors on many lines. I finally got it to import but the model is such a mess it will take hours to fix. Is there a better way to go about doing this?Return to posts indexReport Post•Re: problem importing obj fileby Michiel Duvekot on Apr 26, 2010 at 1:12:25 amthe simple solution is to get in touch with turbosquid and let them fix it. They offer a quality guarantee http://www.turbosquid.com/QualityGuarantee If you want to know what's wrong with the model you can send it to me, michiel@thnkr.com (no, I'm not going to buy it, even if it's only a dollar). The suggested fix to comment out lines with negative numbers is a bit strang, that means the faces won't be created. What you want to do is find the correct index. for example: you have a bunch of vertices defined as v 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 v 0.000000
