Thread Tools Display Modes solving spybot saying "Error retrieving update info file" and ad-aware not updating , and other problems edward gandolfi Guest Posts: n/a 31-05-2004, 08:51 AM my dad's computer had this problem so i did some investigation. it didnt see a precise answer anywhere so give this a shot.. i think that the solution may lie in the HOSTS file. find your hosts file: Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000/XP) open the hosts file with notepad or wordpad. you may have a lot of entries there and some may have like www.noadaware.com or no-spybot.com .. i believe this is spyware taking over your computer making sure you dont get any updates. delete those enteries. in fact, if you want to be safe, delete everything EXCEPT: 127.0.0.1 localhost .......i have adsubtract so i also have: 127.0.0.1 AdSubtract # Added by AdSubtract for auto-dial. 127.0.0.1 ie3.proxy.aol.com # Added by AdSubtract for AOL support. but take the other stuff out. save the file, reboot possibly. try to update, should work now. another thing i found that was annoying but MIGHT not be the problem with spybot is internet explorer setting a proxy on its own. ive had problems with my dad's computer and going to tools/internet settings/connection/LAN Settings and unchecking the proxy option fixed a lot of stuff that was happing. like programs not connecting, or losing internet every few hours. .. it kept rechecking itself but i found out its because ad-subtract was configured to use a proxy. so internet explorer options proxy setting will turn itself on if anything is set to use a proxy. if you still have problems, turn that off and find any program you had running and make sure its not trying to use a proxy honestly i dont remember exactly if turning
