Description Dirk Ulrich 2006-08-14 06:08:03 EDT Trying to use "Software Updates->Find and Install" leads to a dialog telling me: Error retrieving "feature.xml". [error in opening zip file] I have just installed Eclipse 3.2 and then the plug-in: Web Tools Platform wtp-all-in-one-sdk-R-1.5.0-200606281455-win32.zip Doing this the first time some update site entries are shown. Installing plug-in: springide_updatesite_1.3.2.zip manually and then trying to do Software Updates leads to the error described above. viewing Product Configuration via "Help --> Software Updates --> Manage Configuration" all installed plug-ins are marked defective. Was this laso the case before using Update? It seems like your configuration is not good. Your zips look to be defective. Can you show us your logs? in Eclipse, when I tried to use the software update (which, for some inexplicable reason, is accessible from the "help" menu): Error retrieving "feature.xml". [error in opening zip file] Other than the fact that it probably shouldn't have been appearing anyway, what's particularly galling about this error message is that it offers no clue as to what the f*ck has gone wrong, nor even why it matters. The only visible effect of this error was that the eclipse update websites didn't appear in the list, and that a dialog with the error message would pop up with just about https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=153741 any action I would take (other than closing the update dialog completely). Very, very, stupid. I did what I have increasingly found to be the quickest and easiest method of solving problems such as these: A Google search. It led me to this web page: http://www.easywms.com/easywms/?q=en/node/97 …Sure enough, deleting site.xml from inside my eclipse installation directory made the problem magically go away. It turns out that the https://davmac.wordpress.com/2007/10/25/eclipse-cannot-retrieve-featurexml-apparently/ eclipse CDT (C development tools) zip file which I had downloaded, was actually meant for retrieval via the eclipse updater and not meant to be installed by simply unzipping it inside my eclipse directory as I had done. Clearly the CDT guys are partly to blame for this because they don't seem to actually provide any other downloadable version. But… I mean, should the presence of some file in the installation directory really cause such an annoying problem? And if it does, shouldn't the error message at least attempt to explain what the problem actually is? Like this:Like Loading... I also downloaded and unzipped the same c/c++ checker and had the same problem. Your solution is perfect and so simple. Thanks again. Reply Leave a Reply Cancel reply Enter your comment here... [error in opening zip file] When you open Help->Software Updates->Find and install to install a new plugin, this error will cause that you can not install the new one. What is the problem? Do you remember how did you install the last Eclipse plugin? I guess you download the package and unzip error retrieving or just put it into Eclipse's directory, without using the Software Updates tool in Help menu in Eclipse. 1. Delete the site.xml file in your Eclipse directory. 2. Run Help->Software Updates->Find and install, the error will not appear. If the plugin has the official site, from where you can install it in Eclipse using Help->Software Updates->Find and install, I sugguest that you should not download it yourself and unzip it into your error retrieving feature Eclipse directory. For example, EclipseMe, you can refer to http://eclipseme.org/docs/installEclipseME.html to install it, otherwise you will meet such exception! But if this plugin doesnt support online install, you can only download it and unpack it. But Good Luck! I do not understand why you have this problem. When does this occur ? Do you follow the instructions for downloading and installing the plugin via the Eclipse Update Manager ? Maybe you should retest by deleting all net.sourceforge.pmd.* directories in your Eclipse plugins and features directories. If it doesn't work, I'll publish a ZIP file with all directories. But I'd prefer you use the Eclipse Update Manager. Regards Philippe.
