If I comment out DefaultRoot in proftpd.conf the error disappears but this doesn't seem like a safe work around. Given the lack of response to my query should I assume this error doesn't matter?

That said, if it actually works either way, I'm not sure I'd worry about it too much :-) Otherwise, the best I can offer is that there are number of folks on Google who seem to have run into that, some of those may be of help if you want to try and get rid of the message. -Eric Log in or register to post comments #4 Fri, 03/27/2009 - 15:08 mdtiberi I upgraded to proftpd 1.3.2 from the dag repo and logs no longer show a PAM(setcred): System error, however, after chroot still can't find /etc/security/pam_env.conf. My proftp file defaults to: AuthPAMConfig proftpd AuthOrder mod_auth_pam.c* mod_auth_unix.c Now mod_auth_pam is loaded but I can't find mod_auth_unix My understanding is that PAM will give a yes/no; if yes then it gets passed to mod_auth_unix; which I can't seem to find A debug 9 level gives me messages like ... proftpd[4019]: ...
