functions. The downside is that in any system, dealing with huge amounts of data can naturally carry some headaches and frustration along the way. The ORA-12801 would most easily fall into this category, an Oracle error emanating most often in response to errors when processing large jobs. The Problem The ORA-12801 is an Oracle error that has some confusing origins, but is described as an error resulting in some form

from a parallel query server. The error frequently accompanies another error, often the ORA-01652 (which concerns an inability to extend the temp segment in a tablespace). The ORA-12801 is essentially a general error, a sort of catchall for parallel query issues. At this juncture, some of you may be wondering yourselves, “What is a parallel query?” First showing up in later versions of Oracle7, a parallel query option lets multiple processes request and receive data and perform operations at the same time. As you would imagine, this can greatly enhance the speed of the system. To achieve this kind of efficiency, there are several conditions for the parallel query that require attention. So what are those conditions and how do they pertain to resolving an ORA-12801 error? The Solution An absolutely crucial element in successful parallel query operation is the appropriate use of query slaves. If too few or too many are put to use, the system will receive little advantage from their presence. Generally, a good rule to follow is duplicate the number of disks or computers that the operation is used across, and set that as your number of parallel query slaves. Additionally, your tables should account for the parallel query. Run a full table scan to assess

Filed under: Oracle Core — Leave a comment July 28, 2010 Parallel Query Is Oracle's way of scaling database performance. It uses the CPUs to define up how many https://myoraclehome.wordpress.com/2010/07/28/oracle-parallel-query/ parallel requests can be made. When the tables and indexes are defined using PARALLEL = DEFAULT, they pick up the default degree of parallelism for the instance, which should be (processors) x 2 (parallel threads per CPU). So for example, consider a table with 10 rows is partitioned into 5 parts. When we run a query for a full table scan, then the database, can use the parallel query concept error signaled can spawn up to 5 different processed to gather the required information for the query. These separate results are then passed to a parallel query coordinator which the consolidates the results and publishes the output
Usually errors associated with parallel query are something like this. ERROR ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 512 in tablespace ERROR at line 1: ORA-12801: error signaled in parallel query server P005 In the database error signaled in the parallel query parameter is controlled by the initialization parameter parallel_max_servers. SQL> conn sys/password@orcl as sysdba Connected. SQL> alter system set parallel_max_servers = 24 scope=memory; System altered. We can Query V$PX_PROCESS to see how many slaves are running. SQL> SELECT * FROM v$px_process; SERV STATUS PID SPID SID SERIAL# --- ------ ------- -------- ------- ------- P023 IN USE 52 11852 318 441 P012 IN USE 38 11830 327 7723 P000 IN USE 24 10078 348 2064 P004 IN USE 29 10086 357 1433 . . The errors ORA-12805 and ORA-12801 returned from a parallel query don't give the root cause of the problem, they just indicate that we have had some other problem in processing the query in parallel. These messages are usually accompanied by additional messages which indicate the real problem. These additional messages
