They have an error when they take the domain laptop outside of the Local LAN. Basically Word opens fine in the local LAN, but when they go use it at home they error shown in the attached screenshot. All of the other products in the office suite Outlook, Powerpoint and Excel seem to https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1704328-office-365-word-2016-normal-dotm-error work fine. The issue is only with Word. Word will open up and then crash. Upon trying to re-open it is when the Normal.dotm error appears. I did a Office 365 repair which re-installed the software, but the same issue appeared. I am not really sure what to tell you guys on this one. Tried updating to Office 2016 but the problem persisted. I ended up having to create a new user profile on the laptop to get beyond the error. 1 Chipotle OP greggmh123 Jul 7, 2016 at 7:49 UTC Delete or rename the current the normal.dotm file. Word will recreate it when it opens. Unless the user has made customizations in Word, it won't hurt anything to delete or rename it. Sometime the file just gets corrupted. Join Now We have 2 users that needed a trial version of 2010 installed on their XP machines because they will be getting 2010 in the near future. One had office 07 and the other 03. We wanted to have them run 2010 along side the versions that were currently error with normal.dotm on there but ended up uninstalling them in order to get 2010 working smoothly. On the computer that had Office 2007 on it will not open a word document without saying that it can't open normal.dotm file. I've deleted it and the error message goes away for the first time but once you exit you get the same error. I have also tried to copy the normal.dotm from the other computer and that doesn't work either. I have deleted some registry values but nothing seems to work. Other things I have tried include uninstalling and reinstalling 2010, repairing the install, removing parts of the install so it has less features, copied templates over from another person's documents and settings, deleted all of the templates so Office can create new ones automatically, completely deleted the temp folders for the user, and deleted some values in the registry. Help would be much appreciated since Microsoft doesn't support the try before you buy installs.
