No debugger is installed on this machine. Please install one volume shadow copy service warning esent error now. Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Archived Forums W > Windows 8 Pre-release Question 0 Sign in esent error 489 to vote I get this error at any point using MESSENGER applications. Windows Live Messenger is one of them. So is Skype, and ooVoo. The http://www.forumswindows8.com/performance-maintenance/esent-error-debugging-me-5998.htm error gives me a box with the option Retry or Cancel. Retry will have the box come back up immediately. Cancel will have the box disappear but then, within a few seconds, it will reappear. It doesn't go away - and the software it affects hangs until it does. Incidentally, the program https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/2310f418-6d8c-42a4-a683-569e4a2e247d/esent-no-debugger-is-installed-on-this-machine-please-install-one-now-windows-8-consumer-preview?forum=W8ITProPreRel will function in the few seconds the dialogue box has disappeared, but then freezes or hangs when the box is in play. No browsers are currently causing this error. It is only messenger applications. I've tried updating all three - but to no avail or fix. Also - additionally, any other processes with Flash potentially - as trying to play Flash content on BBC iPlayer for example will lead to the error popping up once, then disappearing and allowing the content to play. I've installed the Windows 8 SDK, I've installed Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Express. Nothing is working, it is not recognising any debugging software. How is this fixed? My app needs to store temp data while it runs so I use Path.GetTempPath() to get the path to the temp dir, then come up with filename to use. My problem is that this works completely fine when run under the debugger, or when I simply start the exe from the release build; but when the program is installed using a Setup project, the installed version fails. I'm using ManagedEsent for the temporary on-disk data storage - I don't know if this is relevant or not - and so I'm passing the tempDir + filename to it. The error I get running the installed version is "Error: Cannot access file, the file is locked or in use" which I think is being generated by Esent. I'm only running a single thread on a single instance so there should be no contention on the file. Is there some permission issue with an installed program writing to the Temp dir? The temp dir path is what I would expect, username\AppData\Local\Temp, in both the working and non-working cases. Do I need to somehow grant permission to the app during installation to access that dir and, if so, how? Thanks. UPDATE: App Details: The application is not a windows service - it's a fairly vanilla desktop application wi
