Bad Page Link Error -338 Hardware failures are one of the most prevalent and longstanding issues for all Exchange users. Even a single faulty hardware component on your disk storage subsystem may eventually lead to significant loss of Exchange Server data. Run the following command to do a hard repair of the database: eseutil /p "c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb" Next, defragment and rebuild the database by running: eseutil /d "c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb" Now, backup all your original Exchange database files in your storage group. Posted on 2006-06-01 Exchange 1 Verified event id Solution 5 Comments 2,891 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-05 Today I had a couple users complain that some customers were getting "Delivery Status Notification" Delay errors. I took a look at my Event Viewer (application) and noticed that it was completely FULL of errors. The Errors are Source: ESE, Catagory: Database Corruption, and EventID: 447. The description is as follows: Information Store (3832) First Storage Group: event id 447 A bad page link (error -338) has been detected in a B-Tree (ObjectID: 18604, PgnoRoot: 3962053) of database E:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb (3962053 => 3962060, 2781903). I clicked the link at the bottom of the error and Microsoft says: "Explanation A corrupted page link was detected in a B-Tree. Available space in the Exchange Server Information Store database is in the form of a list of pages that can be used to store new data. The available space is called a space tree. The space tree is held as a binary tree that is searched whenever a block of new data needs to be added to the database. During an online defragmentation, a problem was discovered in this tree. This is often caused by a hardware failure or anti-virus scanning of the database file directory. User Action If you receive these errors in your application log, it is suggested that you restore from an online backup as soon as you can. A bad page link error signifies logical corruption at the Jet level in the database, and it is not safe to continue using the database. NOTE: The restore must be performed using a backup before
by Bill, Feb 10, 2007. Bill Guest Runnin SBS 2003 Pro. The other day we noticed that outgoing emails are delivered without their attachments. Event Viewer was logging a sea of th following errors: Date: date Source: ESE Time: time Category: Database Corruption Type: Error Event ID: 447 User: N/A Computer: Servername Description: Information Store (nnnn) A bad page link (error -338) has been detected in a B-Tree (ObjectId: 70950, PgnoRoot: 157120) of database e:\Program Files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb (157120 => 296404, 296403). I was able repair the databae using the steps from MS from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810190, which also solved the disappearing attachment issue. However, the ESE errors continue, and although at this time we are able to use email to its full functionality, clearly the problem continues. MS lists the following as possible causes. .. Disk caching has not committed transactions to the hard disk and the server has stopped responding (crashed). . Incorrect log files were replayed during a database restoration. .. The server has a defective hard disk controller. As for possible disk problems, I ran CheckDisk which revealed no problems at tha level, and I would appreciate tips on troubleshooting the rest, before the situation gets worse. Thank you, Bill Bill, Feb 10, 2007 #1 Advertisements Jacky Luo [MSFT] Guest Hi Bill, Thanks for posting here. From the description, I understand the issue is that you still got the ESE errors in event viewer after you have repaired the exchange database and you are able to use email to its full functionality. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am not sure how you repaired your exchange database, maybe you just use eseutil and isinteg to repair the database, but in your current situation, I suggest that you use Exchange Mailbox Merge utility (Exmerge) to export the data from the database, to create a new database, and then to import the data into it.
