from your program. For example, I wrote a simple application in C++ called CppTest that crashes schannel error in event viewer by dereferencing a null: char *ptr = 0; *ptr = 0; Lo and behold: my custom application that crashed (not managed code, so it’s not the CLR http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/programs-stop-responding-with-application-hang/fada9d6e-7173-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 doing it!) logged an error in the event log! There are actually logs 2 entries created. The Windows Event Log can be viewed by the Event Viewer (Just type Event at the Start screen) The event log shows these 2 events for the crash: 1. Source = Application Error at the time of https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/calvin_hsia/2013/07/31/scan-the-windows-event-log-for-your-application-crashes-and-hangs/ the crash 2. Source = Windows Error Reporting. This could happen much later than the first, and it includes information about whether or not any data was sent to Microsoft about the crash. The end user has some control over this behavior with the Control Panel: You can take advantage of these error logs. For example, you could write some code that looks for the Windows Event Log entries for a crash to improve your code. Below is a simpel example of code that reads the event log and displays it. You can modify the code to query for your application name. You can find the location of the crash, the faulting module, etc. Here are the same entries as displayed by the code below: Start Visual Studio, File->New->Application->VB->Windows WPF Application Replace the contents of MainWindow.Xaml.vb with the code below See also: Windows Error Reporting and the Appdomain.UnhandledException Event Windows Error Reporting: Getting Started http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3116.event-id-1001-windows-error-reporting.aspx Set Log Retention Poli

Windows 7 X64 application hang Started by AndreasNHagen , May 06 2014 04:08 AM Please log in to reply 1 reply to this topic #1 AndreasNHagen AndreasNHagen Members 25 posts OFFLINE Local time:11:08 AM Posted 06 May 2014 - 04:08 AM Hi Guys, Any idea why our inhouse developed app hangs when being used? Single user 32bit app installed on one machine, running Windows 7 X64, our app was recentlycopied across from a 32bit Windows XP legacy computer, the application does not use the registry(but ini files)and works most of the time, but intermittantly hangs. There is no consistent cause to the program failing. When the app crashes, the rest of Windows works no problem, any tips how to analyse this further? Thanks in advance!
