Case of the Nested Security Group By Jerry Battaglia | Posted February 23, 2013 in Network Admin I love inherited domains. You never know what treasures you'll discover buried in http://www.digitaltruss.com/event-id-1053-and-the-case-of-the-nested-security-group/ the catacombs of Active Directory. So last year we inherited a Windows Server 2008 domain with Exchange Server 2007. For the most part the network has been working fine with respect http://larsjoergensen.net/exchange/exchange-2010/exchange-activesync-doesnt-have-sufficient-permissions-to-create-the-cn to Active Directory. We created additional domain controllers and demoted the file server, added an additional site, did some virtualization, etc., etc. Aside from a Group Policy that looks like it exchange 2013 was assembled by Picasso, it has held together and done what we've asked of it. Until today. After building a new Exchange Server 2010 and adding it to the existing organization without any issues, we decided to move a test mailbox to the new database. This worked as designed and we even left Outlook open during the migration. After it was completed Outlook exchange 2013 activesync respectfully notified us that we needed to close and reopen the application. We did that and all of our test email was there, just as we left it. Checked OWA: success. Checked inbound mail: success. Checked outbound mail: success. Checked ActiveSync: BONK! We couldn't get ActiveSync to connect for anything. We moved another account to make sure it wasn't an issue with this specific mailbox and received the same disappointment. After reviewing the firewall (on which we had to create new rules allowing port 443 through to the new server) I discovered an error. Great! That's got to be it. Fixed it, restarted everything and still no joy. Finally we checked the event logs on the server and we came across this error: Event ID: 1053 MSExchange ActiveSync Exchange ActiveSync doesn't have sufficient permissions to create the "CN=Test User,OU=Users,DC=XXXX,DC=com" container under Active Directory user "Active Directory operation failed on dc2.XXXX.com.
