So I don't know exactly what your instructor emphasized. But in any experimental situation there is always a chance for error and misinterpretation of results. This may be due to inadequate controls, not controlling all variables in the experiment, inappropriate statistical tests that depend on normal distributions, human logic, basic variability of biological systems..... if that's what he/she introduced the class with... experimental design and interpretation.
