initialized "the device is not ready" Page 1 of 5 1 23 > Last » 05 Aug 2010 #1 erikegg69 windows 7 64bit 6 posts external HDD can't be initialized "the i 0 device error external hard drive device is not ready" ok so i got a Seagate® 500GB hard disk model: Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS Im on a laptop and connecting the drives with a Manhattan hi-speed usb 2.0 to sata/ide adapter with power supply I open disk management with either one of them plugged in, i can hear the disk is running and all, I see Disk1 appear on my disk manager screen... it says unknown and i o device error external hard drive seagate not initialized right on the left on the virtual disk manager and when I open this screen, it prompts me to initialize the disk It says: "You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it." I mark Disk1 and select Master Boot Record as partition style, and when I click OK, there's an error message saying "the device is not ready" it worked before, it is actually brand-new. The first time it was used I installed it and formatted on my laptop running windows 7 64bit, then I tried it on a Mac and it wasn't readable, so it was re-formatted (the guy who did it told me it should work on both mac and windows... ), still empty... now i have this problem, I don't know what I can do. I have the exact same problem with another seagate® barracuda but this one is 500GB 7200.11 ST3500620AS, this one isn't brand-new, it was on a desktop mac. pleasee someone help me, I hope I made myself clear, my english is not that good. Started by Rysyonok , Nov 25 2008 12:10 AM Please log in to reply 5 replies to this topic #1 Rysyonok Rysyonok Members 3 posts OFFLINE Local time:09:14 PM Posted 25 November 2008 - 12:10 AM Hi - My old PC died a while back and I had some data on it that I needed. So I took out the IDE HD that was on it, purchased a basic IDE to USB cable, and plugged it into my new PC. And nothing happened. I played around with disk management, but it keeps saying that "device is not ready" when I am trying to initialize the old HD. I tried rebooting, readjusting cables, even moving jumper settings (the old hard drive has about 20 possible settings, but some require up to 4 bridges and I only have 2), and every time it says "device is not ready". Any ideas? The new PC is running Vista, and the old hard drive has XP. Back to top BC AdBot (Login to Remove) BleepingComputer.com Register to remove ads #2 hamluis hamluis Moderator Moderat

I am recieving a message that the drive is not initialized. When I go into Computer Management I can see the drive (as "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialized"), but when I attempt to initialize it or right-click and select "Offline" It tells me that "the device is not ready". This was my secondery drive with all my personnel files, not a bootable drive. I can connect and read the harddrive on my smart TV from Philips, but cant recover the files from there. Any ideas how I can copy the data that I need off of this drive? Is there a third party tool available that I can use? windows-7 hard-drive usb external-hard-drive share|improve this question asked Dec 15 '14 at 16:01 Paul G 11113 1 It sounds like something is wrong with this adapter if you had another disk that "disappeared" while being connected to it. –Ramhound Dec 15 '14 at 16:21 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote This issue would occur with two major reasons One is because of adapter. please change the adapter and check the drive Other reason is the drive may get corrupted due to virus. You can use recovery tool to get recover your data and then you can format your drive. Hope this helps! share|improve this answer answered Dec 15 '14 at 17:40 vembutech 4
