Can't Copy Large Files To External Hard Drive
flash drive is large: 8GB, 16GB, or more. There is enough free space on the drive. You can copy the smaller files to the external drive just fine. Yet, when you attempt to copy a large file (4GB or larger) to the external drive, Windows gives you an error (such as: There is not enough free space on copying files to external hard drive slow the drive, or similar.) Does this sound familiar? If you experience such a problem, most probably it's caused by the fact that your flash drive is formatted with the FAT32 file system. This type of a file system has a built-in limitation on the size of the files that it may contain. Although the total size of the files that you can copy to a FAT32 drive could be as large as 2TB (or the physical capacity of the drive, whichever is smaller), the size of each individual file may not exceed 4GB. This limitation may sound silly: why would anyone design a system that would not allow for the larger files? The problem is, when the FAT32 file system was designed (that was back in the days of Windows 95), no one anticipated that we would have such large files in use today. Or, maybe the designers hoped that by the time such large files become common, the use of the FAT32 system would be replaced by the more modern system

How To Copy Big Files To External Hard Drive
reported. Okay, I am at my witts end here. I tried to cut and paste about 150 GB how to transfer large files to external hard drive mac of files (mostly .avi files) from one external to another via my vista laptop. When I did this it copied about 1/4 of the files and then file too large for external hard drive froze. I restarted my laptop Vista "fixed" my problem through some prompt (I didnt really pay this any attention) and I then attempted to move about 10 GB at a time and it wouldnt allow me giving freezing or sometimes giving me an error. then http://www.winability.com/why-cant-i-copy-large-files-over-4gb-to-my-usb-flash-drive/ I tried 1 file at a time (about 700 mB) with the same result. The files opened and played correctly, just would not let me cut/copy and paste. After this I decided to format the drive that ts was mostly empty and try again, copying from local hdd in my laptop. After I tried this It has ALWAYS froze with 10 seconds remaining....always at 10 seconds. It appears to start copying at normal speeds and the starts slowing with 20 secs remaining and then comes to a grinding halt with http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/cant-copy-large-files-to-external-hdd-ntfs-vitsa 10 secs remaining. Every HDD is NTFS and I can no longer copy and paste with my XP desktop. When I try it it says that my sectors are bad, but when I run chkdsk in XP or Vista it finds 0 bad sectors. I have also tried repairing drive in chkdsk. Please someone I am desperate, this problem is causing me to lose valuable data and rendering my exteranals ans paper weights! Those are a lot handier than Copy/Paste. You may also first want to copy the files to the HDD and then to the other disk. It may be your USB that is fainting. Reports: · Posted 7 years ago Top PDMayton Posts: 15 This post has been reported. Thanks for the tip, but it didnt fix the problem. I have discovered that it always stops copying itself at about the same data size limit....that is to say, around 40-500 Mb it freezes regardless of file size. What is USB fainting....I assume the data is slowly lost through the usb port for some reason or another. What would be some possible fixes to this problem? I will be doing some research tonight. I would like to describe a problem with my notebook that is related to moving large files (from 1 GB up) to and external hard drive via USB. First, here's my Specs: Notebook: HP Pavilion 6950la Specs: Product Number FG755LA Microprocessor 2.1 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-62 Microprocessor Cache 512 KB + 512 KB L2 Cache Memory 4096 MB (2 dimm) Video Graphics NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M Hard Drive 320 GB (5400 RPM) Multimedia Drive LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±RW with Double Layer Support Display 15.4” WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800) Fax/Modem High speed 56K Network Card Integrated 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN Wireless Connectivity 802.11 b/g WLAN Bluetooth Sound Altec Lansing Internal speakers Keyboard 101 key compatible Pointing Device Touch Pad with On/Off button and dedicated vertical Scroll Up/Down pad (Sorry if my copy/paste was large) And then I have the following programs and OS installed: OS: Windows 7 Professional x64 RTM Programs: Ares Cdisplay Combined comunity codec pack Core codec Cyberlink DVD suite (has about 8 programs in this suite) Divx Driver Genius Eset NOD32 4.0 Antivirus Sisoft Sandra Maple 13 Spybot Ultraiso So my problem is: I connect my external hard drive (My book, Western Digital, via USB, powered by a AC adaptor), the OS detects it and installs it quite fine. I'm able to copy large files from my HD to my notebook just fine, the problem is when I try to do that backwards, the system gets slower and slower and eventually gets stuck (sometimes it tells me that the location of my external hard drive is nos found)(even though the file seems to copy, because it appears in my external hard drive). The only thing I can do when my system gets slow is to try and wait a lot of time to remove my hard drive from my notebook carefully so I don't lose any data and then restarting
