First I would run chkdsk on it with the /r option (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK ). If that doesn't work open the command prompt window and use diskpart ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770877%28v... ): type these commands one at a time: diskpart list disk http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/285552-32-corrupted-external-hard-drive select disk # (where # is the number of the external drive) clean create partition primary format fs=ntfs (or fs=fat32 if you want to use on PC and Mac) Reply to RealBeast m 0 l Shinseina 16 June 2012 04:44:17 Hi maryglythloie, I work at a Student IT Help Desk at my school. and from my experience if your computer is unable to interact with the HDD, or it takes a long time to respond, it's usually a lost cause. One solution that has RARELY been seen to work is to completely pull the HDD from the external harddrive casing. Then plug the HDD into a computer via SATA cable, or into an external docking station if you have one available. Then if you can't see it in Windows you can try Ubuntu. If you still can't see anything, it's not recognizing, or it's beeing very unresponsive, than it's most likely a dead/dying harddrive. At that point there are a couple of different companies you can send the HDD off to for data recovery, but it wont be cheap. Anyways best of luck to you and I hope you find a solution for your problem! Regards, Shinsein

Settings Notifications Back to search Windows - Running Disk Scan, CHKDSK on an External Hard Drive Answer #20907 | Updated 03/14/2016 09:51 AM | Access: Everyone What steps should be taken if anexternal hard drive is generating errors in Windows? If your external hard drive is generating errors in Windows, theerrors may be fixed by running error checking on the drive from within Windows, or by using the command-line tool CHKDSK. When a disk drive is generating errors, there may be corrupted files or sectors on the drive that are causing these issues. These errors may be able to be fixed by running Error Checking on the drive from within Windows, or by using the command-line tool CHKDSK. NOTE:These steps SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMED on the hard drive of a server when a RAID array is in use. Neither CHKDSK nor Windows Error Checking is RAID-aware and running these scans may cause more damage than they repair. Run a Scan using Windows Error Checking Open Computer/This PC and locate the external hard drive that needs checked. Right-click on the drive and select Properties. From the Properties screen, select the Tools tab. On the Tools tab, click the Check Now button in the Error-checking section. Select both check boxes to do a full scan of the drive and attempt recovery of data. This option may take longer, but will result in the recovery of data if the drive has corrupt sectors. Wait for the process to finish. The larger the drive and/or the more errors it has, the longer the process will take. When the process is complete, review the log. If any bad sectors were repaired or data recovered, the drive may be usable, but you may want to consider replacing the disk as these errors could indicate potential drive failure in the future. Run a Scan from the Command Line Click Start | Run. Enter CMD.Click OK. At the command prompt, enter the command CHKDSK E: /R where "E:" is the drive letter assigned to the drive by Windows. The /R option flag is the equivalent of checking both boxes in the GUI version of the scan. Wait for the process to finish. The larger the drive and/or the more errors it has, the longer the process will take. When the process is complete, review the results on t
