It started off having really slow copy speeds (kept dropping to around 3kb/sec),

but my computer could read it and can show me what's on the drive (folders, files etc) however, I could not open them, copy them to the fixed hard drive or copy anything to the external hard drive. Now I plug it in and my computer has a bit of trouble reading what's on the disk, and when it can read it, there are some folders I can't even open (see error

message below). I get different error messages from both opening and copying files. For opening files/folders, I get: --- E:\PC Backups is not accessible. The request could not be performed of an I/O error. --- Whilst for a copy/paste job, I get: --- An unexpected error is keeping you from copying this file Error 0x8007085D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. --- I've gone into a couple of PC shops where they told me that they had never encountered this problem before, but might be caused by a bit of dust getting on the disk itself and would suggest buying a new hard drive. I have also had a look at what error 0x8007085D is and it seems that it's a simple disk read error (most commonly due to smudged discs, according to the forums I've seen). I don't mind having to buy a new external hard drive, but I don't want to lose 600GB-worth of backups and important files I need. Any ideas as to what could I do? Many thanks Adam See more I cant copy to my phone but i can copy out What if u tried moving your files,to external storage and it not working what d fault Fix file cannot open i

Clone External Hard Drive
08:01:32 Ok I have got some pretty good help from everyone on here so far so lets see if anyone clone external hard drive windows 7 can figure this one out. I have a WD Passport 320GB External Drive and it shows 298GB Available. Ok fine. Now it says I still have 185GB used and 112GB free. But here http://ccm.net/forum/affich-718765-can-t-transfer-data-from-external-hard-drive is the problem, I can not copy any more files to it because it has an error that says "Cannot copy *****.*** There is not enough disk space. Delete one or more file to free disk space, and then try again. To free up space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click Disk Cleanup." I can not figure out how I am out http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/249724-32-error-copying-files-external-drive of disk space. I should have pleant enough to copy whatever I want to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. More about : error copying files external drive RomDA_73 7 May 2009 19:14:32 IIRC, WD Passports have software that allow the owner to "write-protect" the drive. Maybe that's what happened? Can you also try the drive on another computer? You can also check if there's really space left by going to Windows Disk Management (Windows+R, type "diskmgmt.msc", Press Enter). Last resort is to see if you can back-up the drive, format it, and try again. jmcbride1983 7 May 2009 22:30:59 Well as for the write-protect, I have never set that and I use this drive on a daily basis. I back up all my movies, games, music, etc. I just never had it this full. Disk Management shows that there is 298.02GB Total and 112.71GB Free(37%). I am stumped. This makes no sense to me. I am going to contact WD today and see what they say. If you think of anything else, I will be open for any advice. Thanks. Source File or Disk" Error Recently, I was working with a client who had a strange problem. He was trying to copy some files on his computer and ended up getting this odd error message: Can't read from the source file or disk. What's odd is that he could easily play the file in Windows without a problem. It was only an issue when he tried to copy the file. After playing around with it for a while, we tracked down the problem. In this article, I will mention the different reasons why you may get this error message and what you can do about it. File Size Limits The first thing you want to look at is how big the file is and where you are copying it too. For example, if your file is a huge 5GB movie file, then you won't be able to copy it to an external hard drive that is formatted with FAT16. A FAT16 formatted drive can only support up to a 2GB file. FAT32 can only hold up to a 4GB file. Most external hard drives and flash drives are formatted in FAT16 or FAT32. Check out this cool site that breaks each format down for you and the max file sizes: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm For whatever reason, when you try to perform a copy like this, you can sometimes get the "Can't read from source or disk" error message. It doesn't make much sense, but that's what happens. Possible Bad Sectors If you're using an external drive, you could possibly have some bad sectors on the hard drive, which is causing the problem. In this case, you should scan the hard drive using a tool like chkdsk. If there are any errors, it will go ahead and fix them. If you hard drive is going bad, then you may have to simply get a new hard drive. If you're trying to copy from an external drive to your local computer, then try plugging in the external drive into another computer and see if you get the same error. If so, that means the external drive is probably going bad. It's a good idea to at this point to use some third-party program to copy the files off forcefully even if they have errors. I have written about a program called TeraCopy, which will copies files even if they are corrupted. Power and Cables In a few cases, the issue is related to other hardware factors. If you're trying to copy to an external hard drive, make sure it's got enough power. Sometimes if it's connected to a USB hub or something like that, the drive may not be getting enough power for the writes and therefore it fails. Also, try switching out the cable you are using to connect the external drive to your computer and see if that makes any difference. File Name Problems Another possible reason for the error could be that the file name is something that Windows does
