Recently, I ran into http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/external-hard-drive-not-formatted-error/ a problem accessing it. When I turn it on, Windows assigns it a letter and I can see it under My Computer like normal, but then when I click on it, it says the drive is not formatted and asks me if I want to format it. I assume reformating it would erase all of te information I have on it so I didn't do it. I tried plugging it into a different usb port and i tried plugging it into my other computer, which is a Sony with Window XP, and it still didn't work. The computer I'm using is a Hp with Windows XP.I downloaded a program called Test Disk which is made to find damaged partitions and read the drive. The harddrive has no partitions though, its just one big drive. I had the program display the list on the drive and all the folders and files appear to still be on the hard drive. The TestDisk program also came with a data recovery program. I started using it to recover the files, it est

What can you do under such condition? This post will show you how to fix such external HD errors and make the external hard files in it accessable. First, let’s learn some common reasons that may cause such drive format errors: Sudden power outage when you are transferring files to your external HDD. Not properly ejection the external hard drive. Virus attacking, or bad sectors in external hard disk. Second, you can try this method, maybe it will help you open your hard drive. Click Start button, then click Run. Type “cmd” into the blank and click OK. Or you external hard drive can go to Accessories, and click Command Prompt. Windows 7 users can directly type “cmd” on the Search window in the Start menu. Type “chkdsk c:/f”(if you external hard drive is Drive C) into the Command Prompt window, you can replace the letter c if your external hard drive is not c. Then click Enter button. If it can’t run this process normally, you can try again after restart. It usually takes some time to fix the error, please be patient. When it is finished, your external hard drive may become normal as before. If it still prompts you to format the hard disk after you have try the above solution, you can Free Download Remo Recover (Windows) which is an excellent file recovery program. I have an LG external hard drive which I unplugged one day without doing the safe eject. Now it won't work. The computer recognize its existence on the F drive and disk management says the status is healthy (primary partition) But it will not format. Under File system, the drive is described as RAW. I do not need to recover the data but I got it only six months ago and hate to have to throw it away and buy a new one. Any help would be much appreciated. All new USB drives are SATA drives. The original older ones that you purchased just an enclosure you could put an IDE drive in it.
