clean install (without all the factory add-ons) and I also didn't want the Media Direct on my computer either...so when I reloaded my operating system with
Bootcfg /rebuild Not Working
Dell's help, I didn't install Media Direct - this way I had more of my Hard Drive available. When I went to start my laptop, I mistakenly hit the Media Direct button instead of the power button, and I got an "NTLDR is missing
Boot.ini Windows Xp
error", but I called Dell and we apparently fixed that issue, but my operating system still doesnt load. Instead, when I get to the Dell screen, my computer keeps restarting, endlessly, until I hit the power button to shut it down. As the computer keeps restarting, at the very top left of my screen, almost to quickly to see, there is an error message that says "Invalid BOOT.INI file...Booting from C:\windows\". I am pretty sure when I reloaded my operating system I put it in Drive: D. I did "bootcfg /list and bootcfg /rebuild and then I get the error: Failed to succesfully scan disks for Windows installations... I've run chdsk /r two times and both times it says it fixed one or more errors, but I still cannot complete bootcfg /rebuild. I cannot start in safe mode or last known good configuration. Can someone kindly help me with this? BERRY2006, Oct 16, 2008 #1 Sponsor ekim68 Mike Joined: Jul 8, 2003 Messages: 49,192 If you have the CD of the OS, have you tried getting into the repair console? Start it up and choose R as the option when you get to it...When you get to a DOS screen with a C: prompt, type in 'fixmbr', without the quotes. And, after that, type in 'fixboot', without the quotes..It should take you back to your boot options on the install. Restart the computer and see if this helps.. ekim68, Oct 16, 2008 #2 BERRY2006 Thread Starter Joined: Oct 16, 2008 Messages: 7 thank you for the reply ekim68. My xp pro os is loaded onto the D drive though. i already tried the repair console and did fixboot - no luck - but i didnt try fixmbr yet. I read somewhere that fixmbr may do more damage than good...is this so? unfortunately i havent backup my data for a long time and am afraid of losing my files. Is fixmbr safe? Does anyone know if there's any hope of recovery for me?? Did you try using the DIR command to view the files on your drive? Is everything intact?
