fatal error 40
Community! Creating your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now I've spent the last week or so trying to diagnose an IE issue where some clients cannot connect to the following fatal alert was received 40. schannel 36887 certain HTTPS sites. I eventually narrowed it down to an event log entry.
The Following Fatal Alert Was Received 40 The Internal Error State Is 1205Schannel: "The following fatal alert was received: 40." With all the research I've done, it seems to be an
Schannel Fatal Alert 70error occurring in the handshake for the HTTPS connection. This doesn't happen on all HTTPS sites, only certain ones. I've messed with all of the SSL\TLS settings in IE and I cannot seem to get
Schannel Fatal Alert 20it to work. Firefox doesn't have the same problem. I had this problem a while back and it was linked to the GP setting "Use FIPS Compliant Algorithms...", but that setting has been disabled for a while. I've even checked the registry. I've been fighting with this for a while, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Windows Schannel events 36884 and 36888   17 Replies Habanero OP David1618 Oct 30, 2013 at 8:26 UTC I hope I'm remembering right, but if I remember me looking into those on my systems, ir basically means that a protocol that couldn't be used was requested. Typically this means that another standard ended up being used, and you can generally ignore the error. 1 Jalapeno OP Nicholas9783 Oct 30, 2013 at 8:28 UTC The error itself is generated whenever I attempt to access the website. I cannot access the website, the page does not load. 0 Habanero OP David1618 Oct 30, 2013 at 8:34 UTC If your browser's trying HTTPS using SSLv2, and your server doesn't support it, you'll get that. Same for TLS, or if your browser has other SSL protocols that the admin's disabled for PCI or other compliance reasons. 1 Jalapeno OP Nicholas9783 Oct 30, 2013 at 8:36 UTC To clarify, you're saying that even though the browser settings may say SSL3.0\TLS1.0 for example, there may be setting that overwrites them? Where are those settings? 0 Habanero OP David1618 Oct 30, 201
Internet Explorer 11 on a Windows 2008 R2 server, schannel fatal alert 49 I always got a "Page cannot be displayed" error. schannel fatal alert 48 I could, though, access that page from another machine or another browser on the schannel fatal alert 112 same server. Looking in the Event Viewer I saw: Log Name: System Source: Schannel Date: 05.01.2015 12:11:58 Event ID: 36887 Task Category: None Level: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/401868-schannel-fatal-alert-40-what-is-going-on Error Keywords: User: SYSTEM Description: The following fatal alert was received: 40. Schannel error 40 means: SSL3_ALERT_HANDSHAKE_FAILURE So I checked with SSL Labs which Ciphers my browser offers: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html It looks like it was offering very old ciphers first TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA TLS_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA ... I checked the http://www.basics.net/2015/01/05/windows-schannel-error-40-and-internet-explorer/ following Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Cryptography\Configuration\Local\SSL\00010002 It contained exactly the same old ciphers first! So I looked at a Windows 7 client that was working and saw that there were the newer and more secure ciphers listed first: TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P256 TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P384 TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384_P521 TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P256 TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P384 TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA256_P521 ... I copied the Registry entry of the working machine to the server, rebooted the server and - Bingo - I could now access the web page. The TLS protocol defined fatal alert code is 46. 2.A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 40. The Windows SChannel error state is 1205. Since in error details there is no other information about error I don't know where is the problem. Is someone "probing" my https server and if that is true, how can I find out client IP which is generatingthis errors. Thanks ssl iis https Reply Pengzhen Son... 4342 Posts Microsoft Re: My web (IIS) server event log is full with schannnel error May 11, 2015 05:09 AM|Pengzhen Song - MSFT|LINK Hi, Maybe you have higher cryptographic standard to encrypt the certificate. For more information, please refer to the document: http://blogs.technet.com/b/silvana/archive/2014/03/14/schannel-errors-on-scom-agent.aspx In addition, about the client ip, I suggest that you can try to check http.sys log or IIS log. ssl iis https We are trying to better understand customer views on social support experience.
