the device visible on the USB bus, and I am able to send text tothe printer (however, it's stair-stepped). This only works when I set upa "simple" printcap entry as shown onhttp://hpoj.sourceforge.net/hpoj-0.8/doc/setup-print.html under "Settingup a local print queue".I think I have more than one problem floating around, which makes it evenmore difficult to troubleshoot. Here are the packages I have installed, all from source:apsfilter-7.2.2ghostscript-6.53 (with jpeg, libpng, and zlib, of course)hpijs-1.0.3hpoj-0.8I also upgraded to a Linux 2.4.18 kernel. The distribution is Slackware8, the machine is an Athlon 800 with a VIA chipset, 384 megs of RAM,onboard USB.USB support is compiled in, but the driver for the actual usb device isloaded as a module. Using the uhci USB driver gives me errors when I tryto access the printer, but usb-uhci seems to work correctly (ptal-initsetup with usb-uhci loaded actually finds the printer, while the othermodule doesn't).Problems:1. The stair-stepping effect in text.2. Ghostscript: Using this command, cat /usr/share/ghostscript/6.53/examples/escher.ps | gs -q -sDEVICE=ijs \-sDeviceName=DJ9xx -r300x300 -sPAPERSIZE=letter -dNOPAUSE -dSAFER \-dIjsUseOutputFD -sIjsServer=hpijs -sOutputFile=- - | ptal-print \mlc:usb:OfficeJet_V40I get the following errors errors:unable to set Quality=0, MediaType=0, ColorMode=2, err=4following will be used Quality=20630, MediaType=1073833600, ColorMode=1787unable to set paper size=0, err=4unable to set Quality=0, MediaType=0, ColorMode=2, err=4following will be used Quality=20630, MediaType=1073833600, ColorMode=1787unable to set paper size=0, err=4unable to SetPixelsPerRow width=0, err=4unable to create Job object err=4GNU Ghostscript 6.53: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1On the printout, it says "Error: /ioerror in --.outputpage-- Operandstack: 1 true Execution stack: %i" at which point it runs off the rightside of the page (stairstepping again). It looks like your typicalghostscript error to me.3. Probably because of problem #2, trying to print through lp doesn't doanything; lp reports that it's printing, but the printer isn't. Nomessages appear in the logs.I've seen from other messages that other people have the thing workingcorrectly under Linux, so I'm probably missing something really obvious. Please help! :)Please cc: me on any replies, since I'm not subscribed to the list. Thanks in advance!RJ
