I'm using two USB keys, one 4GB and the other http://www.qdoscc.com/blog/xcopy-file-creation-error-parameter-incorrect 8GB. I've tried copy pasting the commands and typing them by hand, both fail with the following error: C:\winpe_amd64>MakeWinPEMedia /UFD C:\winpe_amd64 U: WARNING, ALL DATA ON DISK DRIVE B: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format [Y,N]?Y Formatting U:... Setting the boot code on U:... Copying files to U:... Sunday, February 03, 2013 3:46 PM Reply | Quote Answers 6 Sign in to vote I had the same problem. The problem lies with the MakeWinPEMedia.cmd After the script partitions and reformats the flash drive, the disk appears offline for about 10 seconds (can be verified if you have Explorer open). This for some reason messes up XCOPY in the way the command is written. SOLUTION: Open MakeWinPEMedia.cmd using notepad (notepad "C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\MakeWinPEMedia.cmd") REPLACE: xcopy /herky "%WORKINGDIR%\%TEMPL%" "%DEST%\" >NUL WITH xcopy /herky "%WORKINGDIR%\%TEMPL%\*.*" "%DEST%\*.*" >NUL notice the \*.* at two places, thats what somehow makes XCOPY wait for the disk to be ready and then copies the files. The Parameter Is Incorrect" error August 28, 2008 By Richard Tubb http://www.tubblog.co.uk/2008/08/28/cannot-copy-file-the-parameter-is-incorrect/ 16 Comments Had a head-scratcher today whilst migrating some data from a 500GB https://forums.techguy.org/threads/file-creation-error-parameter-incorrect.515685/ External USB HDD to a new 1TB External USB HDD, both attached to a client server. Some of the data refused to copy across, throwing up a "Cannot copy file. The Parameter Is Incorrect Error" each time. Same error when the copy was attempted in DOS, RoboCopy or XCOPY. Upon investigation, each of the file creation problematic files were 10GB+ in size - and suddenly the realisation dawned - that the new external HDD was formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS, and thus suffered from FAT32's 4GB file limit. A quick format to NTFS on the drive, and I was able to copy those large files across without issue. Obviously, I have become so used to working with large files nowadays that sometimes I file creation error forget things weren't always this way! That's the error message I get when I try to use Xcopy from a DOS prompt to copy files from a CD I burned, full of .mp3 files, to my hard drive, on my WinXP machine. When I try to drag and drop within Windows Explorer I get something very similar: 'cannot copy - parameter incorrect'. I've looked around the web a bit, googled the problem, and the only clues I've been able to come up with are to Xcopy it. Well, I've tried that with the results above. I was able to drag and drop (and play in winamp) the first half dozen files from the directory before I got any problems. Then I got the Windows message. Then I researched it. Then, using Xcopy I was able to copy 67 of the files before getting the second error message. There's at least another 60 remaining on the drive. Has anyone got any idea what's going on here? And how I can recover my files? regards, ab abrogard, Nov 5, 2006 #1 This thread has been Locked and is not open to further replies.
