How To Use Dansguardian
Daemons Services? How to make daemon start-up with computer? Im running CentOS 5.1 Server (no gui) I hope this is the right forum? So I just installed DansGuardian (a content filter) here at work. Pretty neat application that blocks websites based off rules of several lists... Install process went something like this: download tar.gz extract ./configure + options make install make make clean Upon finishing that process the application was not running so I rebooted the machine in hopes it would autostart... It didn't... At the CLI I simply type "dansguardian" and it started right up (didn't say "starting dansguardian" it just started in the background) Anyway I would like to be able to have this start automatically with the computer? How would I do that? I didn't even know where the actual command "dansguardian" came from (like where the actual program is) although after searching the hardrive I think I found it located inside /usr/local/sbin/ I am assuming thats where it is running from? Thanks for any help... Anyway, use: # service dansguardian start # chkconfig dansguardian on The first command starts the service, the second makes

Also check the Wiki FAQ Allow Traffic Through Firewall/Router A common problem http://contentfilter.futuragts.com/wiki/doku.php?id=common_problems is blocked communications: end user workstations can't communicate with DansGuardian, or DansGuardian can't communicate with its backend proxy (probably Squid), or the DansGuardian filter system can't communicate with the Internet. Usually blocked communications are due to an old/forgotten/erroneous filtering rule in Shorewall or IPtables or your router/NAT box. Double-check your packet blocks, especially the old ones. And watch out for separate rules for ICMP that make `ping` packets behave differently than web surfing packets. End user workstations should have a path to communicate with DansGuardian with destination TCP port 8080 and any source TCP port (assuming something like filterport=8080 and filterip=yourinternalIP in “dansguardian.conf”). DansGuardian should have a path to communicate with its backend proxy with destination TCP port 3128 (assuming something like proxyport=3128 and proxyip=127.0.0.1 in “dansguardian.conf”, http_port 127.0.0.1:3128 in “squid.conf”, and no interfering IPtables or Shorewall rules or policies yet). And the DansGuardian filter system (actually the backend proxy portion) should have a path to communicate with the Internet with destination TCP port 80 and any source TCP port. to find too much about my problem, so I had to post. I am trying to build a web filter out of linux, I have an 11 http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-93587.html year old daughter and the wife and I decided to give her PC and internet. I consider myself a Blackbelt in windows but a young Jedi in Linux. I decided the use https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+question/1978 linux because it is an excuse to actually put it to work and when I get it going (notice I did not say "if", I am not giving up on this box!!!) for windows I don't care if it breaks and she does not have internet for a day or two. I am sure the trouble I am having is trivial but it has got me boggled!! I ran across a set about using Dansguardian, iptables and squid. I have all of this installed on my FC4 box and the gnome desktop. Squid is OK and so is error reading information ip tables. I would like to run the machine "headless" (no mouse or keyboard) just a power cord and CAT5 and use ssh to get to it. if I run 'chkconfig squid on' nothing happens if I run 'chkconfig dansguardian on' I get "error reading information on service danguardian: No such file or directory" If i run 'dansguardian" I get: Error opening/creating log file. (check ownership and access rights). I am running as squid and I am trying to open /usr/local/var/log/dansguardian/access.log I did see that the owner permissions were set to nobody nobody and I managed to chaneg them to squid squid. I am not sure what I have to do here, FC says the user 'squid" is there but I don't know how to view them. Am I in over my head?? Any help would be appreciated!! I am also open to other suggestions about builidng a web filter box utilizing other linux based software... wlaukaitis30th January 2006, 02:33 AMHi again, Is there a way I can "undo" what I have done, at least remove what was put on and re-install??
