site. We have the first site on our server working fine. I had to create a second FTP site (assigned a different port - since it said port ftp 501 syntax error in parameters or arguments was already in use). I made the change on my firewall. I am able to connect to the site, and logon. But cannot see any data - which makes sense due to the error 501 Server cannot accept argument. Error Failed to retrieve directory listing. I was hoping someone could help me resolve this. I tried accessing it ftp error 502 via telnet and was able to repeat the error. Any suggestions or help on this would be greatly appreciated. type of reply can be used to indicate that the command was accepted and the user-process may now pay attention to the data connections, for implementations where simultaneous monitoring is difficult. A new request may be initiated. 3xx Positive Intermediate reply The command has been accepted, but the requested action is being held in abeyance, pending receipt of further information. The user should send another command specifying this information. This reply is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FTP_server_return_codes used in command sequence groups. 4xx Transient Negative Completion reply The command was not accepted and the requested action did not take place, but the error condition is temporary and the action may be requested again. The user should return to the beginning of the command sequence, if any. It is difficult to assign a meaning to "transient", particularly when two distinct sites (Server- and User-processes) have to agree on the interpretation. Each reply in the 4xx category might have a slightly different time value, but the intent is that the user-process is encouraged to try again. A rule of thumb in determining if a reply fits into the 4xx or the 5xx (Permanent Negative) category is that replies are 4xx if the commands can be repeated without any change in command form or in properties of the User or Server (e.g., the command is spelled the same with the same arguments used; the user does not change his file access or user name; the server does not put up a new implementation.) 5xx Permanent Negative Completion reply The command was not accepted and the requested act

I set it up to use a specific port range but when my client tried to use passive mode it showed that it was using the wrong port. This article describes the method for calculating which port it is using. e.g. 227 Entering Passive Mode (x1,x2,x3,x4,y1,y2) The IP it would be using is x1.x2.x3.x4 and port (y1*256) + y2. I was seeing the wrong values for y1 and y2 so I had to restart "Microsoft FTP Service" to actually get it to recognize the values I had set in the FTP Firewall Settings in IIS. share|improve this answer answered Jan 21 '15 at 15:44 Jake Anderson 6113 1 Thanks. I have setup FTP numerous times, but this time I am having a problem. I believe the problem is on the server I am trying to connect to, but I am unsure how to fix it. The box is running Windows Server 2008 Standard. I have created three users, added them to an FTPUSERS group - then given permission to that group to access the directory I want to FTP to. I am running IIS7, with FTP enabled. It looks to be configured properly, but again, I'm not 100% sure. I also have the port on the firewall opened and forwarded to the correct IP address of the box. The port on the box is opened as well. I did a port scan to confirm this. When I try to connect I get the following error message. 01 Server cannot accept argument. PORT command failed Error loading directory... I am not using port 21 - I am using a higher port number and this is configured in the FTP settings on the box. I have tried the fixes listed under support - to no avail.Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.
