years I logged onto "My Garmin" and was told I had a software update available. Downloaded it. Then downloaded the Map Update (from 2012.10 to 2012.20). After the download finished and unit was garmin nuvi 1450 manual ready to install, a message came up that there was not enough room in garmin nuvi 1450 lifetime map updates the unit for US and Canada maps (which i DID have previously), so I had to settle for the US only. WHY?????

I have an external 2GB chip in the unit, so what can be done? I sent an e-mail to Garmin Tech Support which they acknowledge receiving, but no response yet. Anyone else run into this? (Note to you and myself--when buying our next Garmin GPS, check the link above and buy an 8GB--or at least a 4GB--model to best be able to handle future map updates.) Assuming you have lifetime maps, don't sweat the current problem as a new map (2012.30) is due out most likely in the next week or so. Before updating to this map, do a full backup of your current nuvi contents to a computer to be safe, then delete all unnecessary files from the nuvi including voices, help and text files in languages that you will never use, unused vehicles, etc. There's no need to keep Danish, Finnish, Afrikaans, etc., especially if you don't speak these languages. If all of North America in the 2012.30 map still won't fit after these deletions, folks here will walk you through the procedure to install the remaining map areas to your SD card. To be able to install map portions to your nuvi's SD card, be sure when doing map updates to install the update to your GPS and your computer.
