BIOS contains incorrect hard disk values or LBA [wikipedia] is not activated. You installed your Linux system on a new hard disk but forgot to register it in the BIOS. Therefore, stage 1 of the boot loader is loaded, but stage 2 cannot be accessed. The BIOS is not able to detect the full hard disk capacity. For example, in case of a 40 GB disk, it only detects the first 32 GB. However, Linux is installed on the last 8 GB. The computer BIOS is not able to address the hard disk area beyond cylinder 1024. However, the Linux boot partition (or the partition containing the kernel or other files needed for booting) is partly or entirely located beyond cylinder 1024. Usually, this problem only occurs on old machines. However, it may still happen occasionally even with new BIOS versions. The BIOS cannot boot from disks attached to the second IDE controller. However, the Linux hard disk is attached to the second IDE controller. This problem, too, is rather uncommon. The hard disk geometry set in the BIOS during the GRUB installation was changed posteriorly or the hard disk was inserted in a different machine or attached to a different controller after the installation. Solution For cause one, correct the hard disk settings in the BIOS or activate LBA. For cause two, register all hard disks in the BIOS. For causes three, four, and five, a BIOS update might be the answer, provided the motherboard manufacturer supplies a newer

I installed Fedora Core 3 on external Hdd drive in enclosure. After reboot, I changed the BIOS settings in my laptop to boot from USB device. But immediately after booting from USB drive, I get the following error -"GRUB geom error"...and the machine stalls. Has anybody encoutered a similar problem and found a solution to it? During installation, I set the GRUB to be loaded on first sector of boot partition on external Hdd. bcdixit View Public Profile Find all posts by bcdixit #2 12th May 2005, 09:52 PM jamdusr Offline Registered User Join Date: Mar 2005 Posts: 164 There is a fairly long thread on this here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=287509 Seems like it could be a bios problem. jamdusr View Public Profile Find all posts by jamdusr Tags error, geom, grub, installation, solutions « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Thread Tools Show Printable Version Display Modes Linear Mode Switch to Hybrid Mode Switch to Threaded Mode Search this Thread Advanced Search Posting

Join Date Feb 2008 Beans 76 DistroUbuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin GRUB GEOM error with 9.1 I've grub geom error been searching around and this is driving me crazy! Ok, I've got an Acer Travelmate C100 (one of the first tablet PCs, I think) and I hooked up an external (USB) CD/DVD drive to install Ubuntu 9.10. Much to my surprise and delight, everything works completely when installed - even the "tablet" aspect of the PC. I just have one incredibly nagging problem: when I try to boot, I get the "GRUB GEOM error" message. But, if I leave the CD/DVD attached, start the live CD and then select "boot from the first hard drive" it works fine. I've searched on the forums and found threads where people are trying to dual boot with WinXP. Ubuntu is running better than WinXP Tablet PC edition ever did, so the only OS on the PC is Ubuntu. No dual boot or RAID or anything like that, and only one hard drive. I also ended up on this site http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:The_Boot_...RUB_Geom_Error and as best as I can determine my problem has to do with #4 listed under "Cause:". But, I've only got two partitions, one being the swap, and I don't know how I could get the boot loader any closer to the front of the hard drive since Ubuntu is the only OS on there. Does anyone have any suggestions for

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. Previously, I had a dual booting system where GRUB allowed me to boot 9.10 or WinXP. I have two hard drives - an 80 GB drive with XP and a 1 TB drive with Ubuntu. During the upgrade I chose to upgrade my GRUB version. I only selected to install grub on the Ubuntu drive. I didn't work - I couldn't even get GRUB to load. It just gave the error: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found. So I reconfigured GRUB and installed it on both drives. Now GRUB loads and I can boot 10.04 just fine, but I can no longer boot XP. What command should I run to give you a glimpse of my system? Would that help diagnose this? Thanks! Last edited by el_manaba; May 29th, 2010 at 05:50 AM.
