Boot up from RHEL 5.5 installation media and select 'Boot from Hard disk' option in its startup menu. Does Windows XP or RHEL boot up after that? It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. (but MBR of which disk ? the IDE one I assume)The system boots and runs fine with both disks plugged in.If the SATA hard disk is removed, GRUB runs fine as well as the system. If the IDE hard disk is removed (only the SATA plugged in), GRUB fails with :"Grub Geom Error"Before this install, I tryed another one, still with RAID 1 but with only two raid partitions (/ and swap), which leaded to almost same results : boot ok with the two disks or with only the IDE one, and GRUB error with only the SATA disk : "Grub Read Error".I read somewhere that there should be a /boot partition on both disks in order to be able to boot with only 1 disk plugged in. This is why I remade the partitioning with the /boot partition, but well, GRUB still doesn't work with only the SATA disk plugged in.I read also somewhere that GRUB had to be put on the second disk of the RAID array. I assume that during the install, GRUB was put on the IDE disk MBR only, and that I should put it also on the SATA one.I did this way :# grub-install /dev/sda... run smoothly and ends with :# this device map was generated by anaconda(hd0) /dev/hdc(hd1) /dev/sdaBut unfortunately, GRUB complains with "Grub Read Error" with only the SATA disk plugged in.I'm familiar neither with GRUB nor with RAID so I'm a bit confused, but reading manuals and searching around.I think that with the grub-install command; GRUB has been set to the SATA disk, but is not well configured. Shouldn't I have only one line in the device map, like :(hd0) /dev/sda???How do I do that ? Appending the /boot/grub/device.map file to have only the preceeding line, and runing "grub-install /dev/sda" again ? I am going to try.Any ideas are welcome, thanks in advance. Top g
