Ok, I've got an Acer Travelmate C100 (one of the first tablet PCs, I think) and I hooked up an external (USB) CD/DVD drive to install Ubuntu 9.10. Much to my surprise and delight, everything works completely when installed - even the "tablet" aspect of the PC. I just have one incredibly nagging problem: when I try to boot, I get the "GRUB GEOM error" message. But, if I leave the CD/DVD attached, start the live CD and then select "boot from the first hard drive" it works fine. I've searched on the forums and found threads where people are trying to dual boot with WinXP. Ubuntu is running better than WinXP Tablet PC edition ever did, so the only OS on the PC is Ubuntu. No dual boot or RAID or anything like that, and only one hard drive. I also ended up on this site http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:The_Boot_...RUB_Geom_Error a

Join Date Jun 2003 Location Vancouver BC, Canada Posts 887 Grub geom error, what is it and how can I fix it? Hey, I finally got Redhat 9 installed after wasting 11 blank disks and a weeks worth of time. Yet I still have a problem, I installed it to dual boot with geom error windows 98, but when I restart my computer, I get the message in the top left corner of my screen "Grub geom error". And then I can't do anything, the only way I can get into Redhat is to use the bootdisk that I created in the install. Is there any way to to fix this error, or am I going to have to leave it like this? The way my computer is situated is that, the the computer is so old it needs ez-bios to use geom error linux a 20 gig hard drive. That means that it makes the hard drive appear as 2 hard drives, on the first "hard disk 1" is 2.5gb, and on "hard disk 2" I have around 18gb. Hard disk 1 is used for the Windows 98, and on the second disk is where Redhat 9 is, but I also set aside some room as a fat partition on the second hard disk, so that I have extra space for windows on the second disk. Would this be causing a problem perhaps? The easiest thing to do, that I can see, is use a different bootloader. I'm not sure even lilo would be happy under those conditions; you might want to look into something like System Commander. OK, so I'm trying to set up a dual boot with Linux Mint\Windows 7, and have been doing so for hours. I finally found out how to install the Mint bootloader, because I just don't like grub,on a 2gb partition. In easyBCD I add a linux distro selection, and select that partition. When I save and reboot the menu comes up and I chose Linux Mint. A black screen with this exact text appears: Geom Error DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER I installed linux on a 60gb partition on my 1.5tb SeaGate external hard drive. Any help? Which version of Mint are you using? Newer versions user Grub2 which has different configuration files. If you are using EasyBCD to boot, it's likely a failure in EasyBCD not Grub. If you still have the Mint CD, load it and boot the CD, open a terminal and run the command: sudo fdisk -l (lower case letter L) to get your partition information to post. It
