Cause There are several possible causes: The BIOS contains incorrect hard disk values or LBA [wikipedia] is not activated. You installed your Linux system on a new hard disk but forgot to register it in the BIOS. Therefore, stage 1 of the boot loader is loaded, but stage 2 cannot be accessed. The BIOS is not able to detect the full hard disk capacity. For example, in case of a 40 https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=33029 GB disk, it only detects the first 32 GB. However, Linux is installed on the last 8 GB. The computer BIOS is not able to address the hard disk area beyond cylinder 1024. However, the Linux boot partition (or the partition containing the kernel or other files needed for booting) is partly or entirely located beyond cylinder 1024. Usually, this problem only occurs on old machines. However, it may still happen occasionally even with https://tr.opensuse.org/SDB:The_Boot_Process_Hangs_with_the_Message_GRUB_Geom_Error new BIOS versions. The BIOS cannot boot from disks attached to the second IDE controller. However, the Linux hard disk is attached to the second IDE controller. This problem, too, is rather uncommon. The hard disk geometry set in the BIOS during the GRUB installation was changed posteriorly or the hard disk was inserted in a different machine or attached to a different controller after the installation. Solution For cause one, correct the hard disk settings in the BIOS or activate LBA. For cause two, register all hard disks in the BIOS. For causes three, four, and five, a BIOS update might be the answer, provided the motherboard manufacturer supplies a newer BIOS that solves this problem. Otherwise, the problem can be solved by creating a boot partition within the area that can be addressed by the BIOS, i.e. within the hard disk area detected by the BIOS (for cause three), within the first 1024 cylinders (cause four), or on a hard disk attached to the first IDE controller (cause five). In the case of cause four, the problem should be solved by attaching the Linux hard disk to the first IDE controller, if this is possible. When doing this, remember that the device names (/etc/fstab) will change. Adjust these names and the GRUB configuration files with the rescue sys
for the Linux installation. After install, I was getting GRUB geom error and my system wasn't booting. After a few tries I had to format my entire hard disk and run fixmbr which http://linux.bigresource.com/General-installation-GRUB-geom-error-trying-to-install--jG4B3soVi.html came up with the following warning message: A new MBR will be created and some of the partition may become inaccessible Now, even though I have gotten back Windows, the Linux partition is not at all visible. (Seems like http://www.moonnightjobs.net/quot-grub-geom-error-quot-on-boot-139430 the warning message has become a reality as that partition looks like has become inaccessible.) My new hard disk capacity has also reduced by 10 GB and it is not showing up using any software. How can I geom error recover that inaccessible partition? I tried fdisk via Linux Rescue disk. Got an error 22, the details as follows: No luck booting in Windows. View 2 Replies Similar Messages: Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Geom Error After 10.04 Upgrade / Resolve This? After installing Red hat Enterprises Linux 5.5, this comes up when I try to boot. I need help. Thanks. View Answers Very similar questions Advertisement Advertisement Having trouble with grub and a new motherboard/CPU -- trying to get back my Linux! www.linuxquestions.org Greetings! I hope this is the best group for this. (If not, any administrator, feel free to move it!) :-) (I almost did hardware, but it's not really a hardware question, though I am not positive my hardware is good!) :-O Here's the situation: I personally destroyed the 450 MHz Pentium II motherboard by putting the black plastic piece of a new heat sink I had purchased for it BETWEEN THE CPU AND THE HEAT SINK. :-( (Entirely my fault.) I just picked up my Linux system. The man put a new motherboard and a Celeron CPU in it. Because it was the CPU I destroyed, I was thinking and hoping that my drives and PCI bus cards were all still okay. Therefore, because of a SERIOUS lack of time right now (my mother has Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and lives with me, she had a shunt implanted in her brain in March of last year and she is so much better it is both wonderful and hard to believe, but I still have to do a lot for her, and she and my job are my top 2 priorities that take pretty well all of my time, and I am very behind on many truly important things), I was hoping to still find the Fedora 4 Linux that I installed in October of 2005 to still be good. It currently boots (faster than it used to, for the few messages that show up before/at the BIOS, etc.) and goes to grub. I haven't been successful at getting grub to find my file. For example, "root (hd0,0)" indicates "Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83" but then a "kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.13-9 ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet" says "File not found". Looking at printouts I made (in October, 2005 after installing the Fedora), /boot is on /dev/sda1. Looking at a dmesg, I see after "Kernel command line:" the "ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet" I AM NOT POSITIVE that what I've given root is correct, so that is one definite thing of which I'm NOT sure. However, I've tried giving hd0, hd1 and h2 and if I give hd3 I get "Selected di
