process with the message 'GRUB Geom Error'. Cause There are several possible causes: The BIOS contains incorrect hard disk values or LBA [wikipedia] is not activated. You installed your Linux system on a new hard disk but forgot to register it in the BIOS. Therefore, stage 1 of the boot loader is loaded, but stage 2 cannot be accessed. The BIOS is not able to detect the full hard disk capacity. For example, in case of a 40 GB disk, it only detects the first 32 GB. However, Linux is installed on the last 8 GB. The computer BIOS is not able to address the hard disk area beyond cylinder 1024. However, the Linux boot partition (or the partition containing the kernel or other files needed for booting) is partly or entirely located beyond cylinder 1024. Usually, this problem only occurs on old machines. However, it may still happen occasionally even with new BIOS versions. The BIOS cannot boot from disks attached to the second IDE controller. However, the Linux hard disk is attached to the second IDE controller. This problem, too, is rather uncommon. The hard disk geometry set in the BIOS during the GRUB installation was changed posteriorly or the hard disk was inserted in a different machine or attached to a different controller after the installation. Solution For cause one, correct the hard disk settings in the BIOS or activate LBA. For cause two, register all hard disks in the BIOS. For causes three, four, and five, a BIOS update might be the answer, provided the motherboard manufacturer supplies a newer BIOS that solves this problem. Otherwise, the problem can be solved by creating a boot partit

I created a new partition (10 GB in size) and used it for the Linux installation. After install, I was getting GRUB geom error and my system wasn't booting. After a few tries I had to format my entire hard disk and run fixmbr which came up with the following warning message: A new MBR will be created and some of the partition may become inaccessible Now, even though I have gotten back Windows, the Linux partition is http://superuser.com/questions/199074/grub-geom-error-trying-to-install-linux not at all visible. (Seems like the warning message has become a reality as that partition looks like has become inaccessible.) My new hard disk capacity has also reduced by 10 GB and it is not showing up using any software. How can I recover that inaccessible partition? Edit I tried fdisk via Linux Rescue disk. Got an error 22, the details as follows: Command (m for help): w The partition table has been altered! Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table. WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. Hey, I finally got Redhat 9 installed after wasting 11 blank disks and a weeks worth of time. Yet I still have a problem, I installed it to dual boot with windows 98, but when I restart my computer, I get the message in the top left corner of my screen "Grub geom error". And then I can't do anything, the only way I can get into Redhat is to grub geom error use the bootdisk that I created in the install. Is there any way to to fix this error, or am I going to have to leave it like this? The way my computer is situated is that, the the computer is so old it needs ez-bios to use a 20 gig hard drive. That means that it makes the hard drive appear as 2 hard drives, on the first "hard disk 1" is 2.5gb, and on "hard disk 2" I have around 18gb. Hard disk 1 is used for the Windows 98, and on the second disk is where Redhat 9 is, but I also set aside some room as a fat partition on the second hard disk, so that I have extra space for windows on the second disk. Would this be causing a problem perhaps? The easiest thing to do, that I can see, is use a different bootloader. I'm not sure even lilo would be happy under those conditions; you might want to look into something like System Commander. GRUB stands for GRand Unified Bootloader, which is invoked by your system’s BIOS to load kernels and display a boot menu for users to choose from. It's similar to NTLDR or BOOTMGR for Windows, but support both Windows and Linux kernels, and comes with more features. However, if you haven't configured Grub properly, you will encounter GRUB errors like those described below. Grub Loading Error 15, 17, 21, 22 For Grub Stage 1, there are no error numbers, just "Hard Disk Error", "Floppy Error", "Read Error", or "Geom Error". Hence, if you get an error number, you are probably using Grub Stage 1.5 or Stage 2.0. So, what
