(Including CPU failing to respond because of a broken pin.) And there's also a good chance it won't bleep when there's RAM not making proper contact. (May give symptoms resembling a damaged CPU) While OTOH, it's real likely to bleep furiously with a fan issue, if the RPM sensor isn't working or working correctly. Repeated bleeping= Reseat the RAM, just like mentioned on the second line. 1 long and several short bleeps=May just be the fan. (Especially Asus) 1 long and several short bleeps=Some motherboards seem to be real fussy with RAM. More likely with a cheap motherboard. Based on AMI

While I was on gigabyte motherboard Debian the motherboard started to beep (1 long beep) and it switched itself off. Then I was not able to boot. There is no signal going to the monitor. I cleaned the RAM sockets and reinstalled them, rechecked and reinstalled the graphics card, rechecked and reinstalled HDD power and SATA cables, but nothing! Now it doesn't even beep. PS: these are the beep codes from the motherboard's manual: AWARD BIOS Beep Codes 1 short: System boots successfully 2 short: CMOS setting error bios beep codes 1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error 1 long 2 short: Monitor or display card error 1 long 3 short: Keyboard error 1 long 9 short: BIOS ROM error Continuous long beeps: DRAM error Continuous short beeps: Power error motherboard boot share|improve this question edited Jul 8 '14 at 14:16 Oliver Salzburg♦ 56.2k36185245 asked Dec 8 '13 at 1:06 sterz 4141925 2 DUDE, beeps are codes, IBM Beep codes. So count how many beeps besides whether they are long or short. they are IBM Beep codes. –barlop Dec 8 '13 at 1:08 it was 1 long beep (looping) –sterz Dec 8 '13 at 1:09 according to this, on an ibm desktop bioscentral.com/beepcodes/ibmbeep.htm one continuous beep means a power supply error, have you tried changing the psu? and on an ibm thinkpad it means a system board error –barlop Dec 8 '13 at 1:10 no but i am gonna buy one tomorrow. PSU's fans spin though. –sterz Dec 8 '13 at 1:11 1 @barlop, DUDE, BIOS beep codes only apply when booting, not when the system is already running the OS. And they said it no longer beeps after rebooting, so it’s probably something else. –Synetech Dec 8 '13 at 1:15 | show 5 more comments 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted I've found the culprit! Apparently it was indeed the RAM sockets! The beep returned (somehow) so I started t
