Group Policy Multiple Domain Controllers

DJWSpawforths said: We had a new SAN installed, If you disable the network card that connects to the SAN, then the group policy editor works without issue as does the domain controller security policy. When I tracert DC01 it resolves to the IP address of the network card attached to SAN. This server has the PDC role and the other DC seems to be able open group policies without an issue. It appears to be that the DC is looking at the network card attached to the SAN for resolution. Any ideas how to change that? What you have is a multi-homed DC (that is .. the DC has multiple network interfaces installed). That's not supported by MS if I remember right. Anyway, you can try to alter the bindin order of the interfaces. In "Network Connection", choose "Advanced" (it's among File, Edit...) and select "Advanced Settings". Select the other NIC to be the first in the list.cheers,FlorianMicrosoft MVP - Group Policy -- blog: http://www.frickelsoft.net/blog Marked as answer by Morgan Che [MSFT]Moderator Tuesday, August 12, 2008 7:07 AM Thursday, August 07, 2008 2:05 PM Reply | Quote All replies 0 Sign in t

We moved these servers to another location and we added another domain controller. It seems that the 2nd domain controller was causing issues so we tried to remove it. The 2nd domain controller now thinks its the primary DC and the original DC is now saying "operations master: Error" under the RIP, PDC, group policy and infostructure tabs. Any suggestions? nexxevo, Aug 25, 2011 #1 Sponsor Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 Did you make sure what roles each server was running prior to removing any of them from the network? Did you transfer roles? Rockn, Aug 25, 2011 #2 nexxevo Thread Starter Joined: Aug 19, 2011 Messages: 26 Unfortunatly i did not. But its almost as if the 2nd DC is "half on". The 2nd DC is the one i wanted group policy from to get rid of. Do you think that if i just clicked change that it would take over the role on the 1st one? nexxevo, Aug 25, 2011 #3 Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 Is the server you removed still available to be on the network? What version of Windows Server was the new Domain Controller? The second domain controller will pretty much only be "half on" as it does not have all of the roles it needs to do it's job. Rockn, Aug 25, 2011 #4 nexxevo Thread Starter Joined: Aug 19, 2011 Messages: 26 Yes the 2nd DC is still available. It is still powered on. nexxevo, Aug 25, 2011 #5 Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 Read this regarding transferring and siezing roles. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504 Should give you an idea of what you need to do. Rockn, Aug 25, 2011 #6 nexxevo Thread Starter Joined: Aug 19, 2011 Messages: 26 Thanks for the KB article. I did read this earlier. I am just nervous that i may have to rebuild the DC and that wouldnt be such a problem but I have never rebuilt a DC that had an exchange server connected to it. nexxevo, Aug 25, 2011 #7 Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 So you have set up the Exchange Server on a Domanin controller? You should probably attempt to fix any issues you are having prior to doi

When I run gpresult, the User GPOs are applied without problems, but with the computer GPOs, it says "could not obtain the name of a domain controller." This is strange because non-local user GPOs are being applied and work without problem. Our Server is 2008 R2, and we have 2 labs of Win7 desktops. I gathered some logs from event viewer from what should be a sufficient sample of desktops. Almost all of the errors on the machines are GP errors. The following repeat frequently and comprise the bulk of all errors (source is Group Policy unless otherwise noted): 1054: Could not obtain name of a domain controller 7006: Periodic policy processing failed 7017: LDAP call to connect and bind failed after xxx ms 7320: Failed to register for connectivity 7326: Group Policy failed to discover DC in xxx ms 5719: Computer not able to set up a secure session w/ DC (source: NETLOGON) Finally, regarding 1054, I checked the preferred DNS for the desktops and they are pointed to our server. There are no DNS errors on the server or any of the desktops.
