the same server as the domain controller? 0 Datil OP Paul2860 Apr 9, 2013 at 11:19 UTC That's what I was going to check and the error hit when I clicked on GP under admin tools. Roles listed were DC/AD, DNS, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2954031 and DHCP... 0 Datil OP Dashrender Apr 10, 2013 at 3:19 UTC What happens when you open AD users and computers? 0 Datil OP Paul2860 Apr 10, 2013 at 3:34 UTC It opens without issue. It's just the GPMC. I texted with the ex-guy last night. From what I gathered, their DC crashed some time in the past and this machine is one that he built to replace it. The old DC is still listed and there are a bunch of https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/323031-error-pops-up-when-opening-gpmc 1925 events in the logs. At this point, I guess I'm just trying to confirm that I can click on the dreaded "OK" button (only option) in the error window without causing issues. 0 Datil OP Best Answer Dashrender Apr 10, 2013 at 3:59 UTC you can definitely click OK... that will just remove one of the connections within the pane. You can add additional servers by right clicking the top most option in the left pane (Group Policy Management) choose add forest, then add your forest.. If you can't find the forest.. I'd say you might have a DNS issue on that machine (which seems unlikely since you have ADUC working OK. Have you installed the RSAT tools on another computer in the domain? if not, try that and try launching GPM from there. 0 Datil OP Paul2860 Apr 10, 2013 at 4:14 UTC The GPMC didn't open at all. This pop up hit the desktop before it opened. I feel there are multiple issues going on. He said after he rebuilt the DC, he had started removing workstations for the domain and there were only a couple (he thinks) left on the domain along with the servers (SQL, File, Backup, FTP). I need to find out now how he had clients (combination of PCs and Macs) accessing resources on the domain. This situation has me thinking my buddy needs to have his 2003 domain rebuilt/upgraded. I haven't tried from another computer yet. This situation happened and was new to me so I stopped while I consulted
user accounts and computer accounts. Group Policy provides the centralized management and configuration of operating systems, applications, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_Policy and users' settings in an Active Directory environment. A version of https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/111898 Group Policy called Local Group Policy ("LGPO" or "LocalGPO") also allows Group Policy Object management on standalone and non-domain computers.[1][2] Contents 1 Operation 1.1 Enforcement 1.2 Inheritance 1.3 Filtering 2 Local Group Policy 3 Group Policy preferences 4 Group Policy Management Console group policy 5 Advanced Group Policy Management 6 Security 7 Windows 8 enhancements 8 See also 9 References 10 Further reading 11 External links Operation[edit] Group Policy, in part, controls what users can and cannot do on a computer system: for example, to enforce a password complexity policy that prevents users from choosing an overly simple group policy management password, to allow or prevent unidentified users from remote computers to connect to a network share, to block access to the Windows Task Manager or to restrict access to certain folders. A set of such configurations is called a Group Policy Object (GPO). As part of Microsoft's IntelliMirror technologies, Group Policy aims to reduce the cost of supporting users. IntelliMirror technologies relate to the management of disconnected machines or roaming users and include roaming user profiles, folder redirection, and offline files. Enforcement[edit] To accomplish the goal of central management of a group of computers, machines should receive and enforce GPOs. A GPO that resides on a single machine only applies to that computer. To apply a GPO to a group of computers, Group Policy relies on Active Directory (or on third-party products like ZENworks Desktop Management) for distribution. Active Directory can distribute GPOs to computers which belong to a Windows domain. By default, Microsoft Windows refreshes its
