account only takes a few minutes. Join Now I have provisioned a new 2012 R2 STD DC for a client and transferred FSMO roles and verified this via the following commands:
The Network Name Cannot Be Found Windows Server 2008 R2
Get-ADForest | Format-Table SchemaMaster,DomainNamingMaster Get-ADDomain | Format-Table PDCEmulator,RIDMaster,InfrastructureMaster All of these point to the new group policy management the network path was not found DC I have provisioned. I receive the following error when attempting to open Group Policy Management: "Network name cannot be found". I failed to open the group policy object. you may not have appropriate rights have confirmed on the OLD DC that FSMO roles are pointing to the new DC as well. When I attempt to open Group Policy on the OLD DC I receive the following error: "The specified domain

either does not exist or could not be contacted." I have flushed DNS on both DC's and also rebooted the NEW DC. Any takers? Sysvol Share Missing
this in another posting... ANSWER : SYSVOL SHARE had all kinds of error's and wasn't shared properly some how got screwed up. Event Viewer in File Replication Service Had to add a D-Word to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CURRENT CONTROL SET \ SERVICES \ NtFrs \ Parameters and added the dword "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" by default this should be there, if not, create it with a D-Word of 1 restart the service, and then follow the remaining guidelines in event viewer until it succesfully repopulates then following changing D-Word to 0. This fixed my problem, Sysvol shows back up in \\serverroot and I can edit group policy. Credit to Vapour1ze for figuring his own issue out... Hope it helps... 0 Poblano OP PKiah Jul 16, 2014 at 2:14 UTC Here is MS's answer to what happened. PROBLEM: Error: Network Name Could Not be Found, whenever try to open Group policy management console. RESOLUTION: The sysvol as well as the netlogon was not shared, and also came to know that the content of sysvol [Policy, script] folders were missing from the sysvol on Server2 (new server). Reinitialize sysvol as well as the netlogon replication by making Server1 (old server) as authoritative as well as SERVER2 as non-authoritative for the sysvol replication. RELATED KNOWLEDGE

Once the OLD SF-MAIL server was made the authoritative server, the SYSVOL populated with the policies. Perform DCDIAG and post the output here. Also, please post the IPCONFIG/ALL result from your 2003 and 2008 DCs. Solved Group Policy Object Error during server migration Posted on 2012-11-01 Windows Server 2008 SBS Active Directory 1 Verified Solution 5 Comments 2,655 Views Last Modified: 2012-11-06 Hello all, First and foremost, we are group policy currently going through a transition from our old SBS2003 server to our new Windows Server 2008R2. The goal is to have everything running on the new server and to completely shutdown the old one. We have currently transferred all fsmo roles. netdom query fsmo shows the new server for each role. DHCP is now running off of the new server as well. We let the Active Directory sync and all appeared to group policy management be working until we went to edit group policies. The problem is when trying to open Group Policy Objects for editing. Group Policy Management->Domain (set to new server)->Right click on policy->Edit Group Policy Error: “Failed to open the Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate rights.” Details: “The network name cannot be found.” I am currently running as a domain administrator and have selected run as administrator for opening Group Policy Management. I have already checked under Active Directory Sites and Services for the Global Catalog, which is enabled and synced. Switching Group Policy Domain Controller back to the old server allows me to edit the domain policies. However, we do not want the old server running anything. My question is, what step did I miss for transferring all Group Policy Objects from the old server to the new one? What are the steps to transfer the GPOs over so we can safely shutdown the old server? ~Thanks 0 Question by:bmac10 Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 5 Best Solution byKernel_Recovery_Tools Please check this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverMigration/thread/a2262cb2-8883-4a99-86c2-ac74b4e9a8da to sort out the GPO issue. It seems the policies are not synchronized. If I changed the domain controller from the GPMC in Windows Server 2012 to the DC-2012, when I click on any Policy, I receive the error message "The Network name cannot be found". When I click on TOP of my domain name in GPMC (2012), I receive the attached error.
