2009-09-22 09:10 Top Re: GRUB ERROR 15 by edbarx » 2009-09-22 09:45 This error is returned if the specified file name cannot be found, but everything else (like the disk/partition info) is OK.Check the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and the kernel file name. Most probably, you have a name mismatch. If you can post these:Code: Select allcd /boot
ls -lCode: gentoo grub error 15 Select allcat /boot/grub/menu.lstThis will help anyone here to figure out what is wrong. Debian == { > 30, 000 packages }; Debian != systemdThe worst infection of all, is a false sense of security!It is hard to get away from CLI tools. edbarx Posts: 5255Joined: 2007-07-18 06:19Location: 35° 50 N, 14 º 35 E Top Re: GRUB ERROR 15 by dr.tilik » 2009-09-22 10:23 ls -l /boot returnsdrwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 22 set 00:56 boot-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 91690 19 ago 11:49 config-2.6.26-2-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 103568 15 ago 23:16 config-2.6.30-1-686drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4480 22 set 10:13 grub-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6209510 14 set 00:43 initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6178799 13 set 23:17 initrd.img-2.6.26-2-686.bak-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7267088 14 set 11:47 initrd.img-2.6.30-1-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7267680 14 set 11:42 initrd.img-2.6.30-1-686.bak-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 928010 19 ago 11:49 System.map-2.6.26-2-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1125118 15 ago 23:16 System.map-2.6.30-1-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1506032 19 ago 11:48 vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-686-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2023696 15 ago 23:16 vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-686cat menu.lst:# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)#

I am dual-booting between Ubuntu and Vista from a 2yr-old TOSHIBA laptop. The version of Ubuntu I was using is 9.10 (ok, should have updated a while back, mea culpa...) Yesterday I couldn't load Ubuntu and I got a message Code: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[long number] done not exist. Dropping to a shell! I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1355385 and used Ubuntu without any problem. Now today I tried to switch the computer on again and I am getting the error message Code: GRUB loading stage 1.5 GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15 Following the advice on the post above, I updated GRUB to GRUB2 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have... The screen with the GRUB error message comes before the screen that would let me choose between Vista and Ubuntu and won't let me use a command prompt or anything. The only thing I seem to be able to access is if I press F2 at start up which takes me to the Setup utility screen or F12 which takes me to the Boot Manager. Any help would be appreciated as, in effect, my computer is useless as it is now... Adv Reply November 2nd, 2010 #2 Quackers View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Plea

I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on grub error 15 /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years and never Gentoo except for a few days in a chroot. I should mention I also have grub2 installed on dev/sda1 though I don't get as far there: it just shows the grub 'command line'. ubuntu grub2 gentoo grub-legacy share|improve this question edited Apr 18 '14 at 14:23 asked Apr 18 '14 at 3:21 Charle
