Environment SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 Situation After an online update grub fails with:Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition Resolution Solution: For systems running SLES11SP1 or immediate action to get the system back online please see the workaround below. On systems running SLES11SP2 update perl-Bootloader to version 0.4.89.44-0.4.2.1 or later. Workaround:Press enter to get back into the grub menu, press "e" on the default boot entry (usually the first in the list), select the line root (hd0) and press "e" again. Change root (hd0) to the desired value (e.g. if the root device is /dev/sda1, the location would be hd0,0) and press enter. Check the changes on the screen for correctness and press "b" to boot.Once the system is online, please adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst and change all root (hd0) entries to their correct values. Cause After the update /boot/grub/menu.lst contains root (hd0)for the default boot entry but should contain root (hdx,y)instead. Or it could be wrong partition number. To see what filesystem you have, run this command:sudo fdisk -l Offline #3 2011-09-30 12:47:29 pablokal Administrator From: Nijmegen, Holland Registered: 2010-10-12 Posts: 3,581 Website Re: Boot Error 17 after grub error 17 successful installation We had some grub errors because peope choose as file system ext2 instead of ext 4.I don't know if this bug has been fixed: http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?pid=4242#p4242Or pointed to the wrong partitionSee http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?pid=4473#p4473So (syntax) errors in /boot/grub/menu.lst maybe the cause of grub not finding your installation.See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#GRUB_Error_17Use sudo blkid to get an overview of your partitions and check if they are not reshuffled. I chose ext4 for home and root partition and the default filesystem for boot was ext2. But I will ran the sudo fdisk -l as you say and will be back.
