Grub Error 17 Reiserfs
akshat Member Registered: 2008-07-13 Posts: 3 [Solved]reiserfs+grub(error 17 and 18) problems I have a dual boot system running arch and xp. My system is updated except for the last 3 days. I am having grub related errors ie error 17 and 18. My arch partition(home and /) is reiserfs. This started happenig after a few shutdowns by the power switch when I was testing markrcs kde svn repo. Now grub hangs sometimes but otherwise the boot up is fine but long. The system also hangs with not even the Ctrl Alt Shift Pint Screen Rsq option working. My own diagnosis is a either kernel upgrade, reiserfs problem or a hard disk problem.(how do i downgrade the kernel)Can anyone suggest anything to help? I think the problem is that grub-install can't guess correctly, which drive gets which bios number on booting. If you boot from scsi disk the disk probably gets (hd0), but grub shell assumes that ide disks are always mapped before scsi disks. You can edit /boot/grub/device.map and make your scsi disk (hd0) and your ide disk (hd1). Then run grub-install again. Hi - I am trying to install puppy http://knoppix.net/forum/threads/13121-Grub-error-17 1.0.4 to my hard disk, but all I get after rebooting is grub error 17 or 18. I followed the hd install tutorials to the letter, but keep getting the grub error message. grub error I've tried reformatting the hd, installing dos to its own partition then installing puppy but there's the grub problem. Any ideas? Back to top raffy Joined: 25 May 2005Posts: 4831Location: Manila Posted: Thu 15 Sep 2005, 09:33 Post subject: Which tutorial? Do you mean the tutorial below? Grub may be used in many ways, in an ext2 partition install or in WinXP (or 98 ) install. Please grub error 17 be specific about what you were trying to do. _________________Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only). Be sure to check your root(x,y) settings in your grub.conf. DOS? If you really mean that you installed DOS, Puppy can't work with this partition. Did you try a type 1 or 2 installation? If a type 2, tell Puppy to make it an ext2 partition. _________________I love it when a plan comes together --Hannibal Smith Back to top rarsa Joined: 29 May 2005Posts: 3053Location: Kitchener, Ontario, Canada Posted: Thu 15 Sep 2005, 20:32 Post subject: In this case it is not a grub error, GRUB is showing you what the error is. (That's not the same thing). For what I see, GRUB is working OK. Are you doing a Type 1 or a Type 2 HDD installation? (That's the first question when you start the HDD installation wiz

Removed the Linux partitions, created some new ones (swap + reiserfs). But now my system won't boot. I'm getting an "error 17" from grub. It's a VIA EPIA-800 which previously booted with grub just fine. It would be kind of handy to at least have a solution for getting into Windows XP again. The system doesn't have a floppy drive, so the 'recovery console' stuff of Windows NT(+) I've seen should not work. [edit] I forgot to tell I used knoppix-installer-web-latest, and used it to install a 'debian like' system. The partition (/dev/hda3) has 400+ MB free, so that's not a problem. And I can't seem to find the grub config file. Usually you can expect it to be in /boot/grub/ but it's not there...
