The first issue was the installation: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1069951 I installed Ubuntu on my USB harddrive from the LiveCD I'm currently booted on. No errors during installation. It asked to restart, so I restarted. It started BIOS, and then it outputted Grub loading, please wait Error 21 Before that, there was something about Stage 1.5 (seemed important on other threads) I didn't see Stage 2 nor stage 1 on the output. Ok, it seems weird to me, but when I unplug my USB harddrive, and boot, it gives 'Operating System not found'. Why? Vista is still there I hope!? I can't mount OS (Vista's partition) but I can mount HP_RECOVERY. These are the labels of the partitions. I hope you can use those, so it will be more clear to me: Partition Label Mountpoint /dev/sda1 OS /dev/sda2 HP_RECOVERY /dev/sdb1 DATA I made a screenshot of GParted showing my external harddrive: Code: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes

Error https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1073346 21 " Error 21 means : " 21 : Selected disk does not exist This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system. " My motherboard is a ABIT KR7A-RAID with a Highpoint hpt372 controller for RAID (This motherboard has two normal IDE and two IDE for RAID). This https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/8978 error is returned when my HDD in plugged on a "RAID" IDE. (By the way, I don't use RAID, it's a single disk). Ubuntu installation works if I plug my HDD on a normal IDE. I encounter no problem when I install Fedora Core 2 with my HDD plugged on a "RAID" IDE (and with GRUB) (so I don't think it's a BIOS problem). It is a Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra motherboard also with a Highpoint 372 IDE raid controller. I also have only a single drive plugged into the controller and this is the first time I have seen an Error 21 from Grub. I have run various other distros including Fedora and Gentoo without issue. This is also the only hard drive in the system. install to an external USB hard drive. This person already had Debian Linux installed on their local hard drive and was attempting to do an install of Ubuntu to an external USB hard drive. During the Ubuntu USB hard drive installation process, Grub was accidently moved from the internal hard drive to their external hard drive, rendering the original Linux system unbootable without the external drive plugged in. When attempting to boot from the original Debian Linux system, they would encounter the Grub Error 21 shortly after the Grub 1.5 boot process. The good news is that the fix to repair Grub on the original system was quite simple and is illustrated below: Reinstalling or fixing Grub after error 21: Boot into the original Linux system with the external hard drive still installed (or you can boot from a Live Ubuntu CD). Open up a terminal and type sudo su Type fdisk -l and locate your Linux boot partition from the list Example: sda1 or hda1 Type grub-install /dev/sdx or grub-install /dev/hdx to reinstall or repair Grub! Reboot and test!
