Installed system is Debian Lenny. /boot is /dev/sda2 root is /dev/sda6 Grub is installed on /dev/sda2 which is marked active. Booting from hda boots Windows as it should. Booting from sda gives grub error 22. I checked /boot/grub/device.map, it was originally wrong stating Code: (hd0) /dev/sda (hd1) /dev/sdb I changed this to Code: (hd0) /dev/hda (hd1) /dev/sda and reinstalled grub in hd1,1 No errors during install, but still can't boot (still error 22) Booting from live-cd w grub, I can boot installed system by pointing kernel & init to (hd1,1)/* Now I'm lost, don't really know what to do as everything seems fine but just doesn't work? Newer kernel may have been compiled to do without the hda device names which you can check with the /dev directory from the Live CD. Nothing is lost just the hda changed to sda. The kernel has standardised all IDE, Sata, SCSI and USB block devices with the sda, sdb,sdc etc names and limited them to have no more than 15 partitions. The 15 partitions (plus the disk name making up 16 devices) limited has been removed but some installers still stick to it, notably the Debain family. The hda name does not affect Grub but but IDE is always detected before Sata so it will grab the sda status leaving your Sata relegates to sdb. Just move with the time. You need to edit the /etc/fstab and menu.lst to reflect the new d

I tried to install on the 320 G SATA and I would get the same Grub error 22 I followed everbodies guidance on grub. I reinstalled grub with the following commands grub > find/boot/grb/stage1 root (hd3,0) setup (hd0) Well I would get a conformation that everything work and it answered yes. But when I rebooted same error. Error 22 I then booted a live CD and opend my device.map in the /boot/grub/ dir. It listed this HD0 SDA (Raid 0) HD1 SDB (Raid 0) HD2 SDC (320 G SATA) HD3 SDD (LINUX) HD4 SDE (Vista) HD5 SDH (External drive) HD3 is my corect SDD / But HD0 was drive (a) of my raid 0 SDA.
