My system has WinXP installed and Fedora Core 3 also. Using grub to boot, I get Error 25 every time, no matter which of the grub menu choices I try to boot. I have four Linux kernals and one Windows OS as choices via grub. I have grub installed on a bootable CDROM, not in the MBR. I specified to put grub in the MBR when install
from menu, but OK from grub shell Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 08:24:03 +0100 I've created a CD with grub on, & I get the menu OK, but http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/grub-error-25-disk-read-error-275052/ trying to actually boot gives me 'error 25: disk read error'. Hitting 'c' for the command line and typing the commands in the grub.conf verbatim (below: root, kernel & initrd) followed by 'boot' works https://www.redhat.com/archives/rhl-list/2005-May/msg02752.html though. Chaining to the hard-drive copy of the config file ('configfile (hd0,4)/grub/grub.conf') gets the menu OK again, but has exactly the problems. Why might there be a difference? default 0 prompt 1 splashimage (hd0,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz timeout 4 title Linux root (hd0,4) kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 initrd /initrd.img -- [neil fnx ~]# rm -f .signature [neil fnx ~]# ls -l .signature ls: .signature: No such file or directory [neil fnx ~]# exit Follow-Ups: Re: grub: disk error 25 from menu, but OK from grub shell From: Jeroen Wunnink [Date Prev][Date Next] [Thread Prev][Thread Next] [Thread Index] [Date Index] [Author Index]

I installed Fedora 9 onto a spare partition on my machine (dual boot with Windows XP). All seemed fine when I got to the reboot stage but after the reboot, it appears I have a grub issue. Error shown is: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait.... Error 25 I never get to the stage of seleting which OS to boot. Everything I have seen seems to suggest an issue with menu.lst but I cant see the issue: menu.lst: Code: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd2,1) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/sda default=1 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd2,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Fedora (2.6.25-14.fc9.i686) root (hd2,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 ro root=UUID=ad9ee8d1-a10e-4734-a457-e84df4c7abca
error string and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 1: "Hard Disk Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a hard disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the hard disk fails. "Floppy Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a floppy disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the floppy disk fails. It's listed as a different error since the probe sequence is different than for hard disks. "Read Error" This error message will occur if a disk read error happens while trying to read the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5. "Geom Error" This error message will occur if the location of the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is not in the area supported by reading the disk with the BIOS directly. This could occur because the BIOS translated geometry has been changed by the user or the disk is moved to another machine or controller after installation, or GRUB was not installed using itself (if it was, the Stage 2 version of this error would have been seen during that process and it would not have completed the install). Errors Reported by the Stage 1.5 The general way that the Stage 1.5 handles errors is to print an error number in the form "Error: " and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The error numbers correspond to the Errors Reported by the Stage 2 in the listed sequence. Errors Reported by the Stage 2 The general way that the Stage 2 handles errors is to abort the operation in question, print an error string, then (if possible) either continue based on the fact that an error occurred or wait for the user to deal with the error. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 2 (error numbers for the Stage 1.5 are listed before the colon in each description): 1 : "Selected item won't fit into memory" This error is returned if a kernel, module, or raw file load command is either trying to load it's data such that it won't fit into memory or it is simply too big. 2 : "Selected disk doesn
