First thing I did was to format the entire HDD, I created 3 partition; 1 for Windows, 1 for Kubuntu 11.10 and 1 for data. After a while I started to get "HARD DISK ERROR" messages on startup. The message was obviously generated by BIOS. So, I thought it has nothing to do with the OS. I took it back to the shop where I bought it and they send it to HP for replacing the HDD. After 2 weeks I picked it up and they just replaced the RAM memories, updated the BIOS and re-installed Windows 7. But they did not change the HDD. They said there´s nothing wrong with the HDD. I Installed Kubuntu 11.10, single boot, and I am still getting the "HARD DISK ERROR" from the BIOS before Kubuntu even starts loading. This happens 4 times out of 10. Could it be possible that Kubuntu causes the porblem? Does anybody else have that problem? I would take it back to the shop, they would re-install Windows 7 and wunna replace the HDD again... So, what to do? Thanks a lot in advance Adv Reply December 27th, 2011 #2 xyzzyman View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Skinny Soy Caramel Ubuntu Join Date Oct 2005 Location Syracuse, NY Beans 659 DistroUbuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Re: HARD DISK ERROR while booting Originally Posted by marcellux

I use it for 3D graphics https://community.oracle.com/thread/850221?start=0&tstart=0 (running Linux, and mainly with Blender although I also have Maya). The machine was originally used in the making of Lord of the Rings. Anyway, it now hosts Ubuntu Linux 7.04 (I'm wanting to upgrade to 7.10 once I free up some HD space) though there's always been a problem with it... ...I have to use a floppy to boot the thing. The floppy contains "smart boot grub hard loader" and I simply tell it to "boot from hard drive" once the floppy had started. If I try booting from the hard drive without the floppy, I only ever get "Grub Hard Disk Error" at the top of the screen. Nothing in the LXF100 Boot up problems special seems to help here. Looks like it's halting with the error at the 1.5 boot stage, does not make it up to the menu.lst stuff. I don't understand why it boots from the floppy to grub hard disk the hard drive no problem but not directly from the HD. Some website forums have suggested flashing the BIOS to fix this error, although I would hate to trash my system trying that kind of thing. Any ideas? The bootdisk I mentioned is "smart boot manager" which has featured on LXF many times (and if I'm not mistaken now comes with every LXF DVD under essentials/SBM). There is an option to load this onto the harddrive so that it becomes the default bootloader, though attempts to do this have resulted in a loop where it loads itself and waits for me to select hard drive, then it loads itself... I had to fix this using a live Ubuntu CD and the Grub setup command (see below)Grub is (as far as I am aware) on the MBR of the hard drive. That's why it's at least getting as far as saying "Grub Hard Disk Error" at start up. More specifics on Grub b

SCSI? LVM? SAN? Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 2.
