Ubuntu Install Grub Wrong Disk
to the top Grub2 points to the wrong harddisk after installing one more harddisk up vote 1 down vote favorite 1 I have a desktop with two SATA hard drives installed. On one I have Windows, on the other I have Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works fine. Now, I want to install one more hard drive. This is an IDE drive. After installing the IDE drive, Grub no longer points grub device map to the correct hard drive and doesn't find the boot directory, so I end up in grub rescue. In my grub.cfg the Ubuntu installation is on hd1. It seems that the new IDE drive becomes hd0. Does that mean that my Ubuntu (and the boot directory) now is on hd2 (and Windows on hd1)? If so, how can I change this in Grub so that it points to the correct hard drive? Can it be done from the grub rescue prompt? Can I boot without the IDE drive installed, edit grub.cfg, torn off the computer, connect the IDE drive and boot? If I go wrong here, can I edit grub.cfg from a live CD? Check for the list of them here: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Command_002dline-and-menu-entry-commands.html In your case you must identify the drive and the partition where your Grub files are located. Before burning the Ubuntu CD I checked the md5 hash and before installing I checked the burned CD using Ubuntu. Both were fine. Before installing, I ran DBAN (http://www.dban.org/). The install of Ubuntu went smoothly I chose to keep the default partitioning scheme, which is the whole drive running just Linux - no dual booting - nothing fancy. After the install completes, I take the CD out, and it restarts. After my POST, I am left with just: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB Hard Disk Error That's it. Doesn't boot into Linux. I also have a 320GB SATA grub hard disk hard drive with the OS/Application/Files (good data I want to keep). My 120GB ATA is failing I believe, as my computer kept slowing to a halt. However, when I move the drive from BIOS my computer will not start, says "GRUB Hard Disk Error". I know that my Fedora system has an LVM setup. I am looking to just remove the 120GB drive from "the mix", and just have one hard drive. How do I recover ? Thank you. I have access to a Linux Live CD right now and can make any changes.
