for studying purposes. Its built-in OS is Windows 8.1 and it has a 256GB SSD. I've made a separate 90GB partition just for Ubuntu and a live USB to install it. The first time everything seemed to work great, I solved the wifi issued by blacklisting ideapad_laptop, the installation went flawlessly and Ubuntu worked fine. When I got up the next morning and turned on my laptop it booted into Windows right away without ever showing the GRUB menu. So I tried to reset, and checked my partitions with the Disk Manager and everything looked fine. Since I couldn't find a solution online I went ahead and formatted the partition to try and install again. This time and every time since, the installation was aborted and I got a fatal error saying: Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda Executing `grub-install /dev/sda` failed. This is a fatal error. Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem? If any further information is needed I would be happy to provide it. Thanks. When installing I get the following

I have tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 using these guides: Ubuntu on Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro http://peaceplantsandpushups.com/2014/03/12/22/ After I did step 7 in the second guide, I haven't succeeded to save, so I restarted my computer in order to do it again. From this point, I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, and every time I try to reinstall Ubuntu http://askubuntu.com/questions/532540/ubuntu-installation-failure-unable-to-install-grub I get this annoying error: Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. As a result installation script can't find the file and failed to install grub. Quick workaround is that(if you burn iso in USB flash drive) go to pool/main/g/grub2-signed(in usb flash disk) and rename the deb file manually (add 64). Now boot from usb flash drive and run a disk check to be sure. share|improve this answer answered Feb 3 '14 at 16:59 shantanu 3,44873873 my issue solved thanks –Mudassar Ali Sahil Mar 17 '14 at 7:58 I don't have a /pool –Aaron Franke Dec 16 '15 at 19:17 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Hello It would be easiest to just start from the beginning so lets do that, okay?First, boot to your USB and let Ubuntu start a live session. You will see an icon on the desktop that says Install Ubuntu on your desktop. Launch (click on) it. When you get to the screen where it asks you if you want to replace an existing install or install next to it or Something Else, choose Something Else. Now you will see a screen that will let y

installation step: Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error ... Solution: remove the USB stick from which you are installing Debian. Right now it's /dev/sda and the target hard drive you're trying to install to is /dev/sdb (during the installation process only). This has bitten me more than once. Yes, seriously: the Debian installer apparently can't figure out on its own that most likely the place you want to install the boot loader is on the huuuuuuuuge hard drive that you've been installing to all this time, not on the USB stick that you've been installing from. I can totally understand how new research in AI would be needed to solve that problem. Print This Post This entry was posted on Tuesday, September 9th, 2014 at 10:58 pm. After trying several internet suggestions, on my 3rd re-install I finally figured out that I should go ahead and burn the whole live cd iso (~1.3gb debian-live-7.7.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso) to my usb (as opposed to the smaller iso meant for usb). Steve Says: December 26th, 2014 at 5:17 pm Thank you very much! Had this error trying to install openmediavault. My USB was sda and my target drive was sdi I disconnected b-h, and when I got the error, did what you suggested, and pulled out the USB, and the installer started to use sdb. Apparently this error has been around for years. Cheers! Steve Karl Fogel Says: December 26th, 2014 at 5:55 pm Glad it helped you, Steve! Yeah… if I had time I'd dig into the installer code and figure out where the bug is, but alas, one can't stop the car for every bug one passes on the road. I hope someone who works on the Debian installer sees this post and does in twenty minutes what would probably take a non-expert a day or more to do.
