I have an "old" notebook where I've installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 8.04 - everything worked well for a long time. After the kids played with it (i.e. I have not seen what happened), I couldn't boot anymore. Grub simply said Error 17, and nothing else. After several Error 17 failures, the error changed to Error 18 - and this is the error it shows now. What have I tried? I tried several Linux LIVE CD's and DVD's I have: Ubuntu 8.04, Kubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 11, etc. - none of them is able to start, in all modes and options I tried (I have not manually edited the commands, but tried the provided options). I can't use the Live CD OS, and I can't install them either. This is important: it is ok to erase all HD contents! It is ok to format, repartition, lose all HD data - no problem. In most of the Ubuntu flavours, including the 8.04 CD, the initialization stucks, showing repeatedly the following error messages: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata3.00: cmd 25/00:08:e5:a5:50/00:00:12:00:

I didn't say in the video, that this method only works for GRUB 2All you need is an Ubuntu Live-CD and you're good to go!sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repairsudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbIHWoJhIII install boot-repair-ubuntuTwitter: http://twitter.com/UbuntuHelpGuySubscribe for more Ubuntu videos. Grub error 17 is kind of scary because you don't even see your grub menu in this grub loading error case and grub error 15 is very frustrating because it shows the grub menu but comes back to same error over and over again. I was also terrified of these error because once you get these error you can't use your system, you can't access the net and that's is just not cool.is it ? The reason for grub error 17 is a messed up partition table disk order. How partition table disk order gets messed up I have no idea but it does sometimes and then you get error 17. So what does it mean by a messed up partition table disk order. It means say your drive A was /dev/hda2 earlier now it is /dev/hda3 or something else bottom line for you to know is that you need to fix this to get rid of error 17. A good way to find this out is using a live CD $ sudo fdisk -l You ‘ll get something like (this is only an example) Disk /dev/hda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x247ae615 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 1275 10241406 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hda2 1276 24320 18
