Grub Loading Stage1. 5read Error
my home PC , I used to this error message during boot : grub loading stage1.5Read error The machine won't boot. After resetting the machine for 10 to 15 times it'll start booting again. I thought something got messed up in grub boot loader as I triple boot Windows, Ubuntu and Linux Mint, or it could be problem with the Hard disk, as it used to make some noise. But, I was frequented by this problem last week and I had to face this problem every time I boot the machine. Googled for the error message and and found many people facing the same issue, even with single boot Linux. One of the suggestion was to upgrade BIOS. I have not upgraded BIOS before. but it turned out to be simple process. My Motherboard was Intel D945GCNL. Intel has a instruction for different ways of BIOS update. I chose to install by Windows Express BIOS Update. One more reason why I still use Windows! Few clicks and rebooting, it upgraded the BIOS at boot time. 2007 dated BIOS was upgraded to 2008 one. Now I don't see the "Boot error" anymore. If you get this error try updating the BIOS. That shoiuld be the best solution for this problem. Quote Postby chicagocoyote » 2010/12/24 03:36:31 I have a single drive in my system, a SeaGate 76GB SCSI drive.I am running CentOS 5.2.My machine locked up recently with the following message onall xterms: journal commit I/O error. This machine has a separate /boot partition _however_ that bootpartition is ext2, http://tektikr.com/fixing-grub-loading-stage1-5read-error-boot-problem/ not ext3 (and therefore has no journalling). On rebooting (multiple times) the machine would fail to rebootand I would see one of the two following messages: Grub Loading Stage2 Read Erroror Grub Read Error"smartctl -H /dev/sda" yielded:SMART Heath Status OKOn booting of a CD in "linux rescue" mode, all disk partitionsmounted except /boot.I executed "fdisk /dev/sda1" sda1 being the /boot partitionand though I http://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24348 executed no commands to alter the partition,I exited with "w" to save changes as opposed to "q" whichwould exit without saving changes (even though I executedno "partition altering" commands). Now, however, a "linux rescue" boot finds and mounts allpartitions including the /boot partition.---------I tried grub grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0)and then I tried: grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sda1and both times, the machine would still not boot but again gethung up on one of the following messages: Grub Loading Stage1.5 Read Erroror Grub Read ErrorI deleted the Stage1.5 files, reran grub again, and sure, the Stage1.5 error message went away but the machine wouldnow get hung up on "Stage2 error".I finally INSTALLED a new OS, CentOS 5.5, the install completedbut on booting, I still get "Grub Stage2" errors. On this re-install, I left all partitions sizes the same andso /boot was the same size, same location.---------And so, I can't boot off of this disk. I normally would suspectthat the disk has to be discarded _expect_ that in rescue modeI can mount all partitions and have access to all files. What more can I do? Is there some way to repair th

I have been getting very frustrated at this . . I used super grub disk, tried to fix linux boot from that, it failed giving me error 15, tried just booting from sgd, didn't work . . . when it gets this grub message it halts everything, only thing i can do is hit ctrl+alt+del and reboot, no esc, no nothing Anyone know how i can fix this?? I've searched everywhere and no one seems to know, or they say read the grub manual, I have, it hasn't helped, I don't know a whole lot about linux yet so i can't quite fix this on my own yet . . . puro novato. 1
