Grub Rescue Commands Windows 10
40 down vote favorite 16 I have a multiboot system set up. The system has three drives. Multiboot is configured with Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu - all on the first drive. I had a lot of unpartitioned space left on the drive and was reserving it for adding other OSes and for storing files there in the future. One day I went ahead and downloaded Partition Wizard and created a logical NTFS partition deleted ubuntu partition grub rescue from within Windows 7, still some unpartitioned space left over. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted the computer a few days later. Now I'm getting: error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> First of all I was surprised not to find any kind of help command, by trying: help, ?, man, --help, -h, bash, cmd, etc. Now I'm stuck with non-bootable system. I have started researching the issue and finding that people usually recommend to boot to a Live CD and fix the issue from there. Is there a way to fix this issue from within grub rescue without the need for Live CD? UPDATE By following the steps from persist commands typed to grub rescue, I was able to boot to initramfs prompt. But not anywhere further than that. So far from reading the manual on grub rescue, I was able to see my drives and partitions using ls command. For the first hard drive I see the following: (hd0) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) I now know that (hd0,msdos6) contains Linux on it, since ls (hd0,msdos6)/ lists directories. Others will give "error: unknown filesystem." UPDATE 2 After the following commands I am now getting to the boot menu and can boot into Windows 7 and Ubuntu, but upon reboot I have to repeat these steps. ls ls (hd0,msdos6)/ set root=(hd0,msdos6) ls / set prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/g

"Floppy Error" This error message will fix grub after windows 10 upgrade occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a floppy disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the floppy disk fails. It's listed as a different error since http://askubuntu.com/questions/119597/grub-rescue-error-unknown-filesystem the probe sequence is different than for hard disks. "Read Error" This error message will occur if a disk read error happens while trying to read the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5. "Geom Error" This error message will occur if the location of the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is not in the area supported by reading the disk with the BIOS directly. This could occur because the BIOS translated geometry http://www.uruk.org/orig-grub/errors.html has been changed by the user or the disk is moved to another machine or controller after installation, or GRUB was not installed using itself (if it was, the Stage 2 version of this error would have been seen during that process and it would not have completed the install). Errors Reported by the Stage 1.5 The general way that the Stage 1.5 handles errors is to print an error number in the form "Error: " and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The error numbers correspond to the Errors Reported by the Stage 2 in the listed sequence. Errors Reported by the Stage 2 The general way that the Stage 2 handles errors is to abort the operation in question, print an error string, then (if possible) either continue based on the fact that an error occurred or wait for the user to deal with the error. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 2 (error numbers for the Stage 1.5 are listed before the colon in each description): 1 : "Selected item won't fit into memory" This error is returned if a kernel, module, or raw file load command is either trying to load it's data such that it won't fit into memory or i
of playing some games longly missed on Windows. Booting Windows 10 certainly unveiled several pending updates (Antivirus, Geforce, Windows updates). Since Windows 10 does not explicitly http://www.legendiary.at/2016/01/04/windows-10-update-changes-partition-table-and-breaks-grub/ tell about big updates anymore I just did let it reboot several times, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jkCrKrQXuk waiting for manual grub selection then. Though this time the update essentially broke GRUB. "error: unknown filesystem. Entering rescue mode…" is certainly not what I expect from a Windows 10 update. After googling a bit I found this thread including an explanation as well as a solution for the problem: The Windows 10 update grub rescue adds yet another hidden partition, but essentially rewrites the partition table which then breaks GRUB finding the correct /boot partition containing grub2/. Congrats Microsoft! So, Windows 10 "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586" breaks grub2 because boot block grub2 still thinks it should boot grub2 from (hd0,msdos2) when it now needs to boot from (hd0,msdos3). The solution is simple but nasty without bash-completion and English keyboard grub rescue commands layout on a German keyboard. First find the boot partition containing the grub2/ directory. grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos1)/grub2 error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos2)/grub2 error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> ls (hd0,msdos3)/grub2 ./ ../ themes/ device.map i386-pc/ locale/ fonts/ grubenv grub.cfg Next set the changed boot prefix and root attributes: grub rescue> set prefix=(hd0,msdos3)/grub2 grub rescue> set root=(hd0,msdos3) grub rescue> set prefix=(hd0,msdos3)/grub2 root=hd0,msdos3 grub rescue> insmod normal grub rescue> normal Change from "rescue" to "normal" GRUB mode, and quickly select Fedora from the boot menu. In order to fix GRUB log into Fedora, open a terminal and become root. Now generate a new grub configuration. sudo -i grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg grub2-install /dev/sda reboot Reboot and the GRUB menu should be fixed. Now safely choose to continue the Windows 10 upgrade. Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Google+ Logging In...
