In most of these cases the drive can

heal itself of these errors. To do this first back-up all your data from the problem drive ( if possible ) then run DFT again and select either the Erase Disk or Sector Repair option which is under the "Utility" heading. If you already have a backup of the data on the hard disk or the data isn’t important you can opt to run Erase Disk or Sector Repair from the "Test Result" screen. Once the selected operation has completed you can then run one of the test options Quick or Advance to confirm that the drive has been healed. The test result code should then be displayed as 0x00 (drive now healed and OK). If the test returns another code then you should check with your drive/system vendor if the drive can be returned for warranty replacement (depending on when it was purchased). It boots into windows xp and all but launching things like ie and ff for the http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/hitachi-disposition-code-0x72/86399.html first time after reboot is very slow. When closing the browsers down and restarting them ff seems to be fairly fast whereas ie is slow. I am well aware this sounds wierd for a hdd issue but I had tried lots of optimizations and finally opted for a check disk first using the recovery console and than using windows xp to do it. In the recovery console way I would go to 25% it would stall for https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24604230/hard-drive-error-code.html 5 minutes or so than jump to about 50% finally getting to 75% and jumping back down to 50% it would crawl up from 50% at least two more times and pop back to the 50% complete before it actally finished finding some errors and apparently correcting them since when I tried to do this again the exact same why though it took just as long and went through that jumping thing again no errors were found. Next I tried the windows xp way at which point I looked at the log file after completion of the test and 8 KB of bad sectors were found. This doesn't sound like much but to be as thorough as I could possibly be I did a fitness test using hitachi's diagnostic tool since toshiba doesn't make a diagnostic tool for their hard drives I saw from some forums that hitachi's tool would work for toshiba drives. Upon completion of the test I got the red screen telling me that on a non hitachi drive I received a disposition code that was 0x72. I looked around to see what this was about and according to hitachi: "The failing return code 0x72 represents a S.M.A.R.T. error. the S.M.A.R.T. system is a disk drives way of notifying of possible failure in the future." In the screenshot in the pdf file it called the 0x72 a defec

These tools include DFT, Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.), and Predictive Failure Analysis. Available for floopy boot disk, OR an easier method - CD Image (ISO file). The easiest method to create the test disk is burning the "CD Image" to a CD using something like CDBurnerXP. Juts grab a blank CD, start CDBurnerXP (Runs on hitachi hard drive Vista & Windows 7), choose "Burn Iso", browse to where you downloaded the DFT CD Image iso file, select and burn disk.Your computer "boot order" must be set to CDROM in order to load, and start the disk at boot up. From there let the boot disk load, when you get to Hitachi Drive Test menu choose "Advanced" test, this is a much more thorough test for the drive, it will take longer. Sometimes the short or quick test will not report any errors. As the Hitachi Drive Test runs it might stop short of completing, or complete with drive error message codes, OR if your lucky complete with no error messages - PASSED.
