There are many free hard drive testing tools available to help you determine what, if anything, is wrong when you suspect there may be a problem with a hard drive.Tools like Windows Error Checking and the chkdsk command are included in your Windows-based operating system already but some others, like those below, are available from hard drive manufacturers and other developers.Important: Depending on the issue found, you may need to replace your hard drive if it fails some part of one of these hard drive tests. Follow any advice given in the program or see my Get More Help page for information contacting me for advice on what to do.Note: Many excellent Commercial Hard Drive Repair Software programs are available as well. 05/06/2015Share onFacebookGoogle+TwitterPrint I had the misfortune to find out, not long ago, that a computer owner's worst nightmare is a failing hard disk drive. Not because of the need to buy a new one, but because you will face the risk of losing part or even all of your dell hard drive diagnostics error codes stored data. Moving on from the initial apocalyptic view, as the life expectancy of a

short analysis which includes several programs that you can use to analyze your HDD. Let's get started. S.M.A.R.T. & It's Role In Checking The Health Of Your HDD S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is the embedded monitoring http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm system of any modern HDD or SSD, but, unfortunately, it only lets itself be known to us when an imminent hardware failure is possible. That seems to be a little late. Still, luckily for us, there are a series of utilities that can read the various reliability indicators used by S.M.A.R.T. Nevertheless, all major HDD manufacturers recommend an occasional check of your disk status, as well as running a few surface tests and benchmarks. Any version http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-test-health-your-hdd-drive of Windows has the Check Disk tool that is a fairly simple way of caring for your hard disk and identify errors, but it usually seems to be of little help in identifying hardware failure. There are many free testing tools to help us predict and protect ourselves from these unavoidable circumstances of a hard drive failure. Still, I propose using one of these free third party diagnostic tools: PassMark's DiskCheckup, CrystalDiskInfo and/or HDDScan. All these utilities incorporate the built-in S.M.A.R.T feature mentioned above that helps them give information on read and write speeds, HDD temperature and other important indicators of disk reliability. PassMark DiskCheckup DiskCheckup is a hard drive testing program that is free for personal use. You have to download a small 2 MB file with a fairly simple installation and instant reporting of S.M.A.R.T. attributes (if they are supported by your hard drive). In this review I used DiskCheckup v3.3 (build 1000) released on February 5th, 2015. Under the SMART Info tab you can view the current state and values of the following attributes: raw read error rate, spin up time, reported uncorrectable errors, power on time, load cycle count, temperature, command timeout, current pending sector count, total LBAs read (Logical Block Addressing), free fall protection, and head flying hours. You can also enable the "Record SMART attributes for TEC computation" in the Configuration

Not all hard drive crashes are random, so you may have time to backup your data before it fails completely. All modern drives have a monitoring technology called S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) that continuously monitors a number of parameters on a hard drive. Many parameters can be monitored by S.M.A.R.T. hard drive error including read and write error rates, seek error rates, spin up time, temperature and much more. To effectively warn you when certain parameters are degrading or reaching their threshold you need a program that can track these changes and show them to you. Allowing you to test and see whether a hard drive is capable of storing your data safely, giving you time to backup your important files and start looking for a replacement drive should you need to. A monitoring program alone is not fully capable of showing you whether the integrity of your files can be maintained on a particular hard drive. It's a good idea to scan for bad (unreadable) blocks of data with either HDDScan or HD Tune at least once a month to ensure your drive is not degrading and data isn't being lost. Jacobi, PCWorld May 4, 2011 6:00 PM Most users are satisfied with the hard drive utilities that ship with Windows--especially the more powerful partitioning and defragging tools found in Windows Vista and 7. Since you're reading this, though, you're obviously not a "most" type of user. Here are our ten favorite free utilities for partitioning, monitoring, and optimizing hard drives (as well as a few inexpensive for-pay alternatives). Despite offering some high-end features, these downloadable programs won't bust your budget. (For links to all of the downloads in one convenient list, see our "10 Best Free Hard-Drive Utilities" collection.) Partitioning Microsoft's DiskPart--included for free on each Vista or Windows 7 installation disc--is a perfectly viable tool for manipulating FAT and NTFS partitions, but only if you're in a command-line kind of mood. The vast majority of the time, I want something fast and graphical that supports all file systems. Of all the partition utilities I've reviewed, Parted Magic (now in version 6) remains my top pick--not only because it has the free Gnome partition tool (GParted), but also because it has Memtest86+. I'd say that I encounter about one memory problem for every three hard drive problems, so it's nice to have that memory-diagnostic tool around. If you don't need memory testing, or if you just want an alternative Linux partitioning boot disc, GParted Live is a slightly lighter-weight boot disc that also supports booting from a USB flash drive or an external hard d
